Not only do fairness creams sell in abundance in our country but there are several Bollywood celebs who proudly endorse these brands and are indirectly promoting racism in the country. Stars like Shah Rukh Khan, Yami Gautam, Deepika Padukone, and John Abraham are seen as the faces of these popular fairness creams. But there is also an entire breed of Bollywood stars who understand the responsibilities that accompany their public persona and said not to endorse fairness products. Take a look at who all condemned fairness cream endorsements from Bollywood.
The model turned actress was quoted saying in an interview with the Hindu "It’s important to understand that good skin or beautiful skin, whether bright or dull, has nothing to do with its colour. It’s about having healthy, clear skin with a natural glow, which can be achieved in any skin colour across the world."
The actor does not believe in the product and refused to promote a fairness cream for men when approached by a brand. In an interview he was quoted saying "This fair skin obsession has to be discouraged. It's so regressive to put a value, negative or positive, to skin colour. Things like these are actually seeds of racism and they only promote low self-esteem. I believe in loving yourself just the way you are; dark, dusky or wheatish - you're perfect."
In 2016 she turned down an offer to endorse a fairness cream. She was quoted confirming the same in an interview where she said, “I don’t know why we are so obsessed with the colour ‘white’, and why we give it so much importance. We can’t let a child grow up confidently if we discriminate against him or her on the basis of his or her skin colour.”
In 2015 she sworn to never endorse a fairness product after she refused a popular brand “I would not endorse products that propagate racist and sexiest (beliefs)….and propagate social taboo. I don’t want to endorse products that propagate fair skin and all. I will not propagate anything that says this is right or wrong,” she said in an interview.
"I endorse an anti-ageing cream because I do feel I have to take better care of my skin with age," Koechlin continued. "But I am clear that fairness is not something I promote with them. In fact, I would love to endorse a cream which makes me darker, I am always trying to get a tan!" she said in an interview to the Independent.
