Janhvi Kapoor has had to show poise well beyond her years. But as the release of her debut Bollywood film nears, the memory of her mother’s sudden death in February looms large. In a new interview, the young actor spoke about the only bit of advice she received from her mother during the production of Dhadak.

“My mother never came on the sets of the movie,” Janhvi confessed in an interview to the Times of India. But Sridevi did give her one crucial bit of advice that Janhvi followed. “When she saw the rushes, she was very happy. But she advised me to not put makeup in the second half,” Janhvi said.

It was while watching the Marathi film Sairat that Sridevi had told her daughter that she should make her debut with a similar film. And then producer Karan Johar approached her for the remake, which also stars Shahid Kapoor’s half-brother, Ishaan Khatter.

Janhvi is well aware of the huge shoes she has to fill, and said that while she can’t be compared to her mother now, ‘that’s the goal’.

She said that her father, producer Boney Kapoor, is the only family member who has seen the film so far, but she is most excited for ‘Khushi (her sister), Arjun bhaiyya (Arjun Kapoor, her half-brother), Anshula didi (her half-sister)” to watch the film.

“I want to make these four people see the movie more than anyone else. If I feel like I have made them proud, that will be my achievement,” she said.

Her relationship with her half-siblings only developed after her mother’s death. “I know that I have lost my mom and nothing can ever pickup for that,” she said, “but now I feel like, now I have a brother and a sister that I didn’t have much of a relationship with before, for whatever reason. But, I am thankful and blessed that even in this tragedy, I have them now.”

    Dhadak releases on July 20.
