Sanajay has admitted in many interviews even prior to his biopic, that he was knee deep into drug abuse and has spiraled down the abyss as far as humanly possible. Even in the initial stages of his Bollywood career, the fact that he is a raging raging drug addict was not really a secret. Sanjay used to be whacked out all the time and was thus mostly late on sets and the work used to suffer a great deal. Things reached a point when Sunil Dutt used to warn producers about his problem before they started working with Sanjay. But, Sanjay was popular among the audience and producers wanted him to cast him in their films, thus there were some producers who started arranging drugs for Sanjay on the sets of the films so that the shoot of the film is not delayed.
Pushing Namrata Dutt
After he quit drugs, Sanjay has said in multiple interviews that drugs have the capacity to not just ruin your own life, but it harms the people around you as well, especially your near and dear ones and he could not be more right. Once when Sanju was really high on drugs, his sister Namrata Dutt went to confront him. In a fit of rage, Sanju pushed Namrata who fell down and fractured her leg.
First Arrest
Drugs and arrest have been a consistent part of Sanjay Dutt’s life. In fact, the first time he was arrested was also because of drugs. Every time Sanju got high he used to suffer from this fit of rage. Once in while such an incident Sanjay was alone at home and after getting totally out of control in the haze of drugs, he fired a few bullets in his room. His neighbor who saw the whole situation unfolding called the police and Sanjay Dutt was arrested for the first time, even though he soon got a bail.
Sleeping For Two Days
Sanjay Dutt had a habit of locking himself up in his room whenever he used to do drugs at his house. One day he woke up feeling starved and called his house help and asked him to get some food urgently. The house help stood there crying and when asked he told that Sanju that he has woken up from his sleep after two whole days.
Ticking All The Boxes
When Sanjay Dutt wanted to quit drugs he went to his father Sunil Dutt for help. Sunil decided to send him to a rehab facility in Texas, America. When Sanjay reached the rehab center he was asked to fill out a form describing the extent of his drug problem. In one of the columns where he was supposed to tick the boxes for the variety of drugs he has used, he ended up ticking all the boxes. The doctor there was baffled and told Sunil Dutt that after the deadly cocktail of the variety of drugs that he has put in his body the fact that he is still alive was a miracle. He said that it was because of the heavy food that Indians consume Sanjay has been able to make it through.
Maharani Of Sadak
Out of all incidents, this was probably the one with a kind of a silver lining. During the days of his addiction, he used to visit the chawls of Mumbai to get his fix and one of the people he met there was a transgender of a peculiar character. While making of the film Sadak Sanjay told Mahesh Bhatt about this character and Bhatt decided to model the character of Maharani, the villain of the film according to this character. Sadashiv Amprapurkar who essayed the role of Maharani in Sadak received a lot of appreciation for the path-breaking role and was also honored with a Filmfare Award for the same.
