5 Movies That Released This Year But We Were Stupid Enough Not To Go Watch Them

Though on the face of it, it looks like Bollywood is improving but that's not always the case.

Take this year for example. Only a few Bollywood movies have been able to make a real dent at the box-office (those with Salman Khan and Akshay Kumar in it). Moreover, Bollywood has constantly been beaten by Hollywood this year.  And this has resulted in a few studios shutting down, a few producers going on a rant and even a few major stars getting a big humble pie of failure.

Why is this still  happening, one might wonder? Why an industry which has been in its best overall financial shape has been struggling as of late? 

The answer is simple really. Bollywood movies still by and large produce middling and repititve content which many people have started to get tired of. And the movies that do try to break the mould are generally not big enough to attract major stars and hence they can't get marketed properly. All of this results to less encouragement for good films, which hurts the industry in the long run.

Which movies you ask? Well:

1. ALIGARH

This Hansal Mehta directorial about a suspended gay professor at Aligarh University is one of the finest movies of the year. Not only that, it features the best performance of the year in the form of Manoj Bajpayee. But still, the film didn't attract our attention.

Box-office: ₹2.5 crore

2. RAMAN RAGHAV 2.0

After the disappointment of Bombay Velvet, Anurag Kashyap made a stellar comeback with Raman Raghav 2.0. The film gave a new take on the serial-killer genre and boasted a pitch-perfect performance from Nawazuddin Siddiqui.

Box-office: ₹7 crore

3. PHOBIA

Another fantastic film (a psychological thriller). Another brilliant central performance (Radhika Apte). But too bad audience opted out of going to the theatres. 

Box-office: ₹2.52 crore

4. NIL BATTEY SANNATA

This heart-rending movie about a difficult relationship between a mother and a daughter boasts the power to melt even the hardest of hearts. But sadly, this Aanand L. Rai production, went somewhat unnoticed.

Box-office: ₹4.82 crore

5. WAITING

This gem of a movie featuring an utterly convincing Naseeruddin Shah and Kalki Kolchein is capable of teaching a lot about love and loss to whoever watches it. But sadly, few chose to.

Box-office: ₹2.85 crore
