Box-Office Report: Akshay Kumar's Rustom Easily Beats Hrithik Roshan's Mohenjo Daro
Epic clashes, in Bollywood or otherwise, usually have a clear winner and a loser. And in the battle that took place on August 12 between Rustom and Mohenjo Daro, it's the Akshay Kumar that has come out on top.
Released on the long weekend of Independence Day, commercial expectations were quite high from the big releases and it's only Rustom that has lived up to it.
No, it's not even close.
Based on true events, Rustom had a thunderous opening of over ₹14 crore (better than Akshay Kumar's Airlift) and kept on growing exponentially over the course of the weekend. What came an even bigger surprise that film minted a massive ₹17.91 crore on Monday, which brought its 4-day haul to nearly ₹70 crore.
Worryingly, that isn't the same isn't the case for the Hrithik Roshan starrer. The film earned a low ₹8 crore opening on Friday, which is one of the lowest opening in the star's recent career. Though, the film picked up in the next three days, it has only managed to earn just over ₹40 crore.
Well, you might say that Mohenjo Daro's ₹40 crore isn't that less than the ₹70 crore Akshay Kumar's Rustom has made. But you need to understand that Rustom was made on a ₹50 crore budget--which it already has recovered. On the other hand, the epic saga Mohenjo Daro's production cost is nearly ₹120 crore!
Meanwhile, Akshay Kumar is all set to have third film (after Airlift and Housefull 3) in 2016 to enter 100 crore club in domestically.
