IIFA Nominations: 10 Worthy Performances The Jury Didn’t Care About This Year!
The biggest cinematic stage in the international arena for Hindi movies, ‘IIFA’ recently released its list of nominations for this year’s awards. Having been the top global representative for Indian cinema in the last 15 years, IIFA holds a credible façade in the hearts of millions of fans all around. Also, with its set schedule usually falling in the later part of the year, the event also gets the best eye to judge and select its nominees.
With the list of nominations now out for this year’s IIFA Awards to be held in Madrid (Spain), you can’t help but notice some of the biggest snubs the jury has made on this occasion. From categories ranging from music to acting, there’s a fine share of people who’d only be considering themselves quite unlucky at the moment.
With fair amount of quality coming out of the industry last year, our only question to the jury is, what was it you were smoking while making your picks this season?
Here are 10 of the biggest snubs in this year’s IIFA who we feel should have been on the list:
Best Actress - Anushka Sharma – NH 10
Delivering one of the most powerful performances of 2015, the hero of the movie ‘Anushka Sharma’ hasn’t been given a place in Best Actress category. Instead, Shraddha Kapoor, who we honestly didn’t expect to make the cut, has been nominated for her performance in ABCD 2.
Shraddha? Did she make it through her dance quota?
Best Actress – Richa Chadda – Masaan
Having impressed a large chunk of viewers and critics all around the globe, Richa Chadda has also got a big snub for her performance in Masaan.
Maybe performance in Madrid was what that mattered more!
Best Picture – Badlapur
Arguably the most shocking, gripping and gritty film of 2015, Badlapur has found no place amongst the nominees for Best Picture.
With Bajrangi and Bajirao in, may be the jury had enough of ‘B’s!
Best Direction – Sriram Raghavan – Badlapur
Like getting snubbed in the category for Best Film wasn’t enough, the jury didn’t find Badlapur’s director Sriram Raghavan worthy of being a nominee for Best Director either.
“You’re a superb filmmaker Sriram, you don’t need awards” (Sriram saying to himself!)
Best Supporting Actor – Sanjay Mishra – Masaan
Someone who should have taken this award home with no questions asked, has not even been nominated to bag it in the first place. Maybe the jury didn’t know a film like Masaan even existed.
Why care for a Dhoti laden Mishra when you have an urban cool Farhan from Dil Dhadakne Do!
Best Story – Himanshu Sharma – Tanu Weds Manu Returns
Undeniably the most loved film of the year, Tanu Weds Manu Returns despite being tagged as the most wonderfully written comic drama couldn’t find any luck in the writing department. No story, screenplay or dialogues award for this Kangana starrer.
“Humko Upar Se Order Mila Hai, 3 Se Zyada Nomination Nahi De Sakte”!
Best Music – AR Rahman – Tamasha
You may argue he has probably not been at his best lately, but AR Rahman’s complete Tamasha album was better than most that we heard last year. If Pritam for Bajrangi Bhaijaan can make the list then Rahman appears to have been snubbed bigtime.
Jury be like – “Rahman has an Oscar, why waste an IIFA on him”!
Best Playback Singer Male – Ankit Tiwari – Tu Hai Ki Nahi (Roy)
We don’t get it really! The jury has pulled only three nominations out of thousands of songs that got made last year. Two of which have been nominated to Arijit Singh. Ankit Tiwari, who was mostly a rage last year for his songs like Galiyan, Tu Jo Hai and Tu Hai Ki Nahi has not been nominated for any of his songs. Unlucky, you’d say?
Jury to themselves – “Are we allowed to nominate anyone else when Arijit is already winning the award”?
Best Playback Singer Female – Alka Yagnik – Agar Tum Sath Ho
The eternal voice that we have already started believing as a thing of the past, mesmerized us yet again rendering the beautiful composition of Agar Tum Sath Ho from Tamasha. Alas, Alka doesn’t find her name in the list of nominations!
Overheard at Jury discussion - "Don't worry, we'll give her lifetime achievement next year!"
Best Playback Singer Female – Palak Mucchal – Prem Ratan Dhan Payo
Were we missing a point when this song became an overnight sensation last year? Harmoniously voiced by Palak Mucchal in 2015, the young singer though has found zero recognition at the IIFA. Tough luck!
Who’s composed it? Himesh? Himesh who? The Teraa Surroor guy? Then no!
While these are 10 of the biggest snubs who we thought should have at least made it to the list of nominations, further snubs may still be in store for us when the event takes place on June 23rd. While Kangana has already bagged the coveted National Award honor for Tanu Weds Manu Returns, would she find any luck at the IIFA’s or would it be Deepika as the tradition has been this year? We’ll find that out!
