SABSE SHAANA KAUN (REVIEW): What (dry-wit/ strut/ flirt) will work in Shahrukh Khan’s favour?

Yesterday the role of a smug, dry-witted game-show host who is more than a tad full of himself, Shahrukh Khan finally found the right television shoes for himself at 9 pm.

He mocked, he teased, he clasped, and he proffered dimpled cheeks to credulous girls in the crowd. And it all worked, because few strut as well as Shah Rukh can.

SABSE SHAANA KAUN (REVIEW): What (dry-wit/ strut/ flirt) will work in Shahrukh Khan’s favour?

The show itself features a simple trivia-based format, probably licensed from some popular globally-replicated show.

Contestants compete in teams of two and are asked random questions about any subject at all, and the winning pair gets to win a whopping crore rupees.

The rub here is that the questions are being thrown to them by video-clips of strangers -- faces of whom are displayed rather spiffily in the form of a fast-flowing strip, a ‘train’ of faces as Khan calls it -- who can ask anything they want.

So the contestants randomly try to figure, based on their own goofy logic, who might ask them an easier/tougher question.

And so the draw of lots goes on, with Khan egging on both teams.

He is, as might be imagined, an unashamedly smooth flirt, as well as a man who always wears an air of cunning intelligence.

    It’s a helluva combo.

Even in the past celebs have tried hosting reality shows, most have made their mark. For example Amitabh Bachchan (Kaun Banega Crorepati), Salman Khan, Sanjay Dutt have hosted Bigg Boss and also Aamir Khan who did a splendid and an appreciable job in Satyamev Jayate. Shahrukh Khan tough hasn’t had the Midas touch working for him lately, but this time with SSK, SRK will look to turn the tide.

So what should work for King Khan has been the talk of all entertainment journalists. So, what should really work for SRK, this time round?

    1. The ‘aam-aadmi’ connect. The degree of connect seems to have heightened.
    2. If Bigg Boss fans of 9 PM are looking for an ideal replacement, a big star for a big star, then the show might find itself lucky.
    3. Extract TRP’s from the presence of A-list celebs.
    4. The concept is very new in India, for audiences who are fed with clichéd reality shows like Bigg Boss.
    5. Comeback after a long time. Zor Ka Jhatka was not a big hit, so the time is ‘ripe’ to prove the critics wrong.
    6. The wit and charm he ushers.
    7. His attitude, this time, which looks to be relaxed could work for him. He looks more in the zone.
    8. The set is huge tough we will take time to get acclimatised to it.
    9. Indiawaale Express could work wonders for the show, if it becomes a household name like ‘We love, we love Gauti’!

Siddharth Basu the producer knows how to create hit shows. He was the man behind the iconic ‘Kaun Banega Crorepati’.

Let us hope SRK fans do not get disappointed this time.
