Shark Tank India: When Ashneer Grover called automated robot a 'Khilona'

BharatPe co-founder Ashneer Grover is one of the judges on the reality show Shark Tank India who stole the limelight for his blunt feedback on the business ideas pitched by the entrepreneurs on the show. His feedback is still making headlines despite the show going off-air in February this year.

Recently, we recalled an episode of the show where Ashneer called an artificial intelligence-based automated robot, a khilona (toy). In the episode, Mumbai-based young entrepreneurs Pratik Tirodkar and Ashish Patil introduced their company PNT Robotics and Automation solutions that manufacture products using machine learning and artificial intelligence. They presented an artificial intelligence automated robot named Ado, a proto, who pitched the idea to the investor’s panel for them. Their prototype robot was enabled to talk in regional languages, recognize faces, and also had human emotions. The 21-inch screen attached to its stomach acted as a kiosk used for advertising.

Sharing his feedback over the idea, Ashneer said, “Yaar tu na college project ko Zindagi bana raha hai, ye robot nahi hai, ye khilona hai.Ye kisi ke use nahi aa sakta, 1980 me isko sab robot samjhte the. Aaj ki date me koi samjhdaar banda ise robot nahi manta.”(Dude, you are making the college project life, this is not a robot, it is a toy. It cannot be of any use, in the 1980s, people used to understand robots, today no sensible person considers it a robot). Watch the video here:

Further, he dropped the idea of investing in their company by saying, “Mere taraf se chhod do isko tum bohot smart bande ho, tumhe coding aati hai hardware kar sakte ho. Kisi acchi company me kaam karo, samjho pehle problem kya hai solve kya karna hai. Entertainment hai yeh aur kuch nahi hai”( I suggest you should not pursue it, you are smart enough as you know coding you can do hardware. Hence, work in a good company, and try to understand what is the problem and solve it. It's just entertainment, nothing more.)

However, Lenskart co-founder Peyush Bansal charmed by their intelligence, later cracked a deal for Rs 25 lakhs for 25 percent equity and Rs 25 lakh debt, against the original ask of 50 lakhs for 4 percent equity.
