Vicky Vidya Ka Woh Wala Video review: Rajkummar Rao and Triptii Dimri starrer gives a strong message without being preachy!

They call such times as the silence before the storm. We would like to call this as a ‘common sense’ before two fast approaching typhoons! We are indeed talking about this week’s release Vicky Vidya Ka Woh Wala Video. Just before the two typhoons arrive in the form of Rohit Shetty, Ajay Devgn combo Singham Again and Kartik Aaryan, Madhuri Dixit, Triptii Dimri, Vidya Balan starrer bhool Bhulaiyaa 3 on the other side.

It only made sense for the filmmakers of Rajkummar Rao and Triptii Dimri starrer Vicky Vidya Ka Woh Wala Video to be releasing their film couple of weeks before the aforementioned giants. But, will the story and direction of Vicky Vidya Ka Woh Wala Video make sense to the audiences, lets analyse.

The film Vicky Vidya Ka Woh Wala Video starts off with Vicky (Rajkummar Rao) standing in front of railway track in the night trying to end his life by jumping in front of an approaching train. The audiences are then taken to a flashback of events which becomes the reason for a ‘simple-minded-but-highly-pressurised’ Vicky to end his life.

In the flashback, we are introduced to Vidya (Triptii Dimri) and Vicky (Rajkummar Rao), who happen to be a doctor and ‘mehendi lagaane waala’ respectively. There is a wedding engagement scene where Vidya is ‘happily’ getting married to a man of her parents’ choice, even though she and Vicky are in love with each other immensely.

Just in the nick of time, both, Vicky and Vidya apply reverse psychology and land up getting married to each other in the same venue! One needs to see the film in order to find out the ‘reverse psychology’ that we are referring to. The newly married couple fool their parents by saying they are following the family tradition of going to the religious Vaishno Devi after the marriage… but, land up going to Goa for their honeymoon!

It is in Goa during their honeymoon that Vicky hits upon a ‘wild idea’ after reading a newspaper article about foreign couples making a video of their honeymoon in order for them to be eternally happy post their marriage! He tries to convince Vidya to shoot their honeymoon video. Vidya, who is reluctant at first, eventually, ends up agreeing to make her honeymoon video with her ‘patidev’ Vicky.

One day, hell breaks loose when they realise that a robbery has taken place in their house. And to make things worse, Vidya and Vicky’s ‘woh waali video’ also happens to be one of the items which has been robbed. Thereafter starts the ‘search operations’ by Vidya and Vicky for their ‘woh waali video’.

Do they become successful in hunting back their video, was robbery of ‘who waali video’ the mere motive of the robber or is it more than what meets the eye is what forms the rest of the film.

First things first. The first few minutes of the film will feel like a yawn fest and runs like a headless chicken as the proceedings are really slow. The film takes its own time to pick up pace and also to establish the characters. But, once that is done, the film is all about ‘zip zap zoom’!

Its nice to see film’s director is Raaj Shaandilyaa, the very man who gave us films like Dream Girl and Dream Girl 2 amongst other films trying his hand to bring something that has got a strong message in the end (Revealing anything more about the end will only mean giving out the spoilers!). Even though his direction may not be at par with his earlier films, Vicky Vidya Ka Woh Wala Video does leave a mark in the minds of the audiences.

The film’s cinematography could have been comparatively higher and better, when you have stars like Rajkummar Rao and Triptii Dimri as the leading pair! The film’s narrative starts dipping at regular intervals, but, thanks to Vicky… we mean… Rajkummar Rao and his antics, he brings back the film on its track!

The film’s editing could have been much, much better. Had the film been trimmed by many minutes, the film could have shined more! There are a couple of scenes which just could have been avoided. Biggest of them all is the ‘Stree’ sequence in the graveyard! Even though the makers did try to recreate the Stree magic, it lands up looking like a mockery of the cult Stree, which, ironically and co-incidentally stars Rajkummar Rao! This sequence could have been avoided by all means.

The film is led by Rajkummar Rao and Triptii Dimri, two of the promising names and bankable names in today’s times. Both have a crackling and sparkling on screen chemistry. Even though they bring nothing new to the table, it’s their chemistry that adds to the likeability factor of the film!

The much-hyped comeback of the ninety’s siren Mallika Sherawat is just about okay. Her role lacks meat and a well-defined sketching. The second sequence which could have been avoided was her recreation of a nineties track with Vijay Raaz.

Speaking of veteran actors like Vijay Raaz, Tiku Talsania and Mukesh Tiwari, they do what is expected of them to do. The rest of the actors help in taking the film forward. However, one really needs to say that, Archana Puran Singh’s character is a total let-down and could have been etched better!

The music of the film acts as a saving grace. There are already a couple of tracks which have been immensely liked by the audiences. Even though there are just a handful of original tracks, many tracks are the hit ones from the nineties!

The film is expected to good business, majorly due to Alia Bhatt’s Jigra having comparatively less theatres. Word of mouth will surely act as a key factor for Vicky Vidya Ka Woh Wala Video. All in all, Vicky Vidya Ka Woh Wala Video will ensure a smile on your face!
