Phir Aayi Hasseen Dillruba review: Sunny Kaushal joins Taapsee Pannu and Vikrant Massey as the trio continue to ‘author’ their twisted hide and seek love story

First things first. Do yourself a small favour. Before you watch Phir Aayi Hasseen Dillruba, do watch Hasseen Dillruba, as many may feel lost in transit while watching the sequel. For the unversed, Hasseen Dillruba mirrored a mysteriously failed love story of a ‘unhappily married’ couple Rani Saxena (Taapsee Pannu) and Rishabh Saxena aka Rishu (Vikrant Massey) till the time Neel Tripathi (Harshvardhan Rane) enters their lives.

Circa’ present day- Phir Aayi Hasseen Dillruba starts off with a completely drenched Rani (Taapsee Pannu) who comes running in the middle of the night to the police station pleading to save her from her husband Abhimanyu (Sunny Kaushal). The film, then, gets into a flashback mode which shows the accidental introduction of Abhimanyu (a compiunder by profession) and Rani (who is a beautician). In no time, Abhimanyu gets totally besotted with Rani and her strong personality.

And those who know the film's crux (as was shown in Haseen Dilruba), will surely relate to the fact that, the entire story being ‘scripted’ by Dinesh Pandit. And for those who don’t know who he is, its time for you to upgrade your ‘dillruba’ knowledge!

The film is followed by a recall of events by Rani, wherein she introduces the audiences to Rishu, who has now become Ravi and also the love interest of Poonam (Bhumika Dubey). On her part, Rani gets married to Abhimanyu, after her successfully redefines ‘pyaar mein intezaar’. Amidst all this, they land up crossing paths with Inspector Mrityunjay Paswan (Jimmy Shergill), who has been given the charge of investigating the extremely complicated case centring around Rani, Rishu and now Abhimanyu as well!

Will Mrityunjay Paswan be able to solve the totally complicated case, what will be the outcome of the same, whose side the scale of justice tilt to, and what role does Abhimanyu play as a husband in the already married life of Rani and Rishu, is what forms the rest of the story.

There are many things which work in the film’s favour. Firstly, the success of the film’s 'predecessor' Haseen Dilruba, is what forms the crux of Phir Aayi Hasseen Dillruba. It’s the curiosity about the film Phir Aayi Hasseen Dillruba and its ‘eventual content’ that will drive the audiences to see the film. This is followed by the outstanding performances of the film’s trio viz., Taapsee Pannu, Vikrant Massey and Sunny Kaushal! The icing on the cake, however is the way in which film's writer (Kanika Dhillon) story gets presented!

Amidst all these positives, one just cannot discount and turn a blinf eye towards the fact that the film does have its share of loopholes. These loopholes are in the form of the film oscillating between the past and the present at regular intervals. A bit of consistency in the film’s narrative would have surely helped the film in a major way. In addition to that, the second half of the film starts becoming a bit predictable. In other words, the curiosity factor starts dipping in a bunch of places.

As for the technical aspects of the film, the direction of the master filmmaker Jayprad Desai is extremley commendable, of course, with a few avioidable loopholes in certain places. Ditto is the case about the film’s screenplay. As stated earlier, the film’s oscillation between the past and the present may just land up confusing the audience. The film’s editing (Hemal Kothari) is simply perfect and majorly acts in upping the film’s thrill aspect.

The film’s songs are not thrusted upon in situations, which also works in its favour. It’s the film’s background music that takes the cake. The cinematography (Vishal Sinha) of the film is simply outstanding. Full marks in that department.

As for the performances, no prizes for guessing the film rides on the tried and tested shoulders of the fiery and feisty Taapsee Pannu, who (yet again) delivers a spellbinding performance. This is followed by a stunningly surprising performance by Sunny Kaushal, who could kill a thousand people with that innocent face and not even a single person can suspect him of the crime! he, definitely is the surprise package of the film. Vikrant Massey lives upto everyone's expectations and does fulll justice to his role. Jimmy Shergill is at his usual best. Rest of the cast help in shouldering the film forward.

Those who have loved Haseen Dilruba and those who love ‘love-filled thrillers’, will surely take to Phir Aayi Hasseen Dillruba like a fish to water. A must watch, highly recommended!
