Werewolf by Night Movie Review - The MCU's first Halloween special is a fun homage to classic horror movies

Werewolf by Night is a Halloween TV special set in the MCU and is directed by Michael Giacchino and follows the event of one night when a group of monster hunters gathers at Bloodstone Manor to compete for an ancient and powerful relic.

The special was its inspiration on its sleeve as it is clear that the director and writers were paying homage to classic horror movies like Frankenstein and Dracula from the 1930s and 40s with a bit of inspiration thrown in from Tales from the Crypt.

The special is 51 minutes long and is entirely in black and white, and it is not just a gimmick thrown in, thanks to the use of practical effects and use of light and shadow effects that make this feel authentic and fun.

This is definitely something unique and unlike anything, we have seen in the MCU so far and that is a very good thing, it is clear that the people involved with projects are true fans of classic horror movies and embrace their tone and use old-school lighting techniques.

Director Michael Giacchino manages to build tension as the competition between the hunters intensifies by also utilizing an amazing score by Michael Giacchino.

the performances from the lead actors Gael García Bernal as Jack Russell who is kind and charming and Laura Donnelly as Elsa Bloodstone who more than manages to portray her character as the bad-ass monster hunter and the chemistry between the two is great to watch.

Another mention has to go to Harriet Sansom Harris as Verusa Bloodstone who is Elsa's stepmother and is over the top and fun to watch.

Overall the experience was not an out-out horror experience but still managed to keep me engaged thanks to its creepy atmosphere, strong performances, and tight screenplay.
