Janhit Mein Jaari Movie Review: Nushrratt Bharuccha starrer tries to deliver a strong message but a shoddy screenplay makes it fall flat

The plot revolves around Manokamna Tripathi (Nushrratt Bharuccha) who takes up a job as a sales executive in a condom-producing company. She tries to go along with the job without looking at it as a taboo and fighting all the obstacles that come as the prying eyes of the society.
Jai Basantu Singh’s social drama Janhit Mein Jaari tries to put in a strong and unexplored message on celluloid which has been backed by a solid performance by Nushrratt Bharuccha . The movie delves deep into the importance of condoms and protected sex to avoid the various mishaps faced by women due to negligence. However, while the movie went off as a decent start with a tint of humor and message, a weak screenplay and the over-the-top preachy treatment make it go extremely haywire.
The plot revolves around Manokamna Tripathi (Nushrratt Bharuccha) who takes up a job as a sales executive in a condom-producing company. She tries to go along with the job without looking at it as a taboo and fighting all the obstacles that come as the prying eyes of a society that is highly unnerved by the sight of a woman selling condoms. However, after a personal tragedy hits her hard, she takes up the job even more aggressively and faces resistance from her in-laws.
The movie began on a very promising note with writer Raaj Shaandilyaa blending the tongue and cheek humor along with the message in a conventional manner. The sub-plots of the female protagonist facing resistance from her parents (Ishtiyak Khan and Sapna Sand) or Manokamna’s childhood friend, Devi ( Paritosh Tripathi ) crushing on her, add the humorous and entertainment quotient in a seamless manner. One could connect with the protagonist’s confidence and values as she embarks on her new job for which she faces countless judgments on every path.
However, the movie goes downhill primarily in the second half when more serious undertones come into play. It heavily relies on some highly preachy and amateurishly created circumstances to put forth its message. Each sub-plot starts to look more and more predictable as the film gradually moves forward in its second installment. In one instant, Manokamna’s sister-in-law is thrust into a vulnerable situation just so that her father-in-law can realize his mistake and closeted approach toward his daughter-in-law but immediately the next moment, that crucial plot line just vanishes into thin air. A cringe dialogue by Manokamna’s husband Ranjan (Anud Singh Dhaka) about a married man’s life being like underwear and a bizarre moment involving the interchange of a condom and a medicine only adds up to these over-the-top and borderline cringe moments. One cannot fathom how the female protagonist suddenly catapults into a local celebrity and strikes up a national debate towards the end which should have been highlighted in a more nuanced manner.

This laboriously adds to the screenplay of Janhit Mein Jaari which in turn lengthens the pace of the movie at an overwhelming rate. Talking about the performances, they form one of the biggest validating aspects of the film. Nushrratt Bharuccha breathes life into her character in a seamless manner and is unwavering as the captain of the ship. She does full justice to her character and takes the movie considerably on her shoulders. Watch out for some impeccable performances by Brijendra Kala , Vijay Raaz , Ishtiyak Khan, Sapna Sand, and Paritosh Tripathi. Their comedic timing and performances act as a major saving grace when the movie threatens to falter from its goal. Anud Singh Dhaka makes an impressive debut and is effortless in the humorous scenes but sometimes has his slightly weak moments in the serious moments.
Janhit Mein Jaari has quite a lot of songs in its kitty but mainly the catchy Holi track ‘Udaa Gulaal Ishq Wala’ and the romantic song ‘Parda Daari’ is a major standouts. Jai Basantu Singh’s efforts to bring out such an important should be lauded but the movie could have been more impactful with sharper execution. We give Janhit Mein Jaari 2.5 out of 5 stars.
