Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3 review: Kartik Aaryan, Vidya Balan and Madhuri Dixit prove three is not a crowd, but total spooky entertainment!
Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3
For those who do not believe in the ‘concept’ of ghosts, spirts and reincarnation, chances are that you may rethink your stand after seeing this film !
It’s not every day or every week we get to see two films clashing with each other. This week is one such week wherein one sees two mammoth films clashing! These films are Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3 and Singham Again. In the past, one has seen films like Aamir Khan’s Dil and Sunny Deol’s Ghayal being released on the same day, and both these films went onto create box office history! Will this week’s release Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3 and Singham Again go on to create history at the box office or will it land up eating each other’s space, let's analyse!
As for Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3, the film starts off with an extremely spooky scene, which is followed by the present-day scenario, which states that its post 200 years! We are then introduced to the ‘funkily spooky’ Ruhan aka Rooh Baba (Kartik Aaryan) and his sidekick Tillu (Arun Kushwah). Their job? Well… till the time the common man believes in the existence of ghosts and spirits, they won’t starve for money!
Seeing his ‘Baba-giri’, there enters ... Meera (Triptii Dimri) and her uncle (Rajesh Sharma) meet him to avail his ‘Baba-services’. And in return, they promise to pay him Rs. 1 crores! Even though Ruhan is a bit reluctant at first, Meera and her uncle lure his way into obeying them. What follows after that is his entry in Rakht Ghat, a place where his life will change forever!
Upon reaching Rakht Ghat, Ruhan finds it extremely strange that everyone starts staring at him, even without having seen him before! That’s when he realises that he is no ordinary man, but a ‘frame to frame’ reincarnation of Rajkumar Debendranath.

The storyline becomes even murkier when Rajpurohit (Manish Wadhwa) tells Ruhan that, since Manjulika wanted the throne, she killed her half-brother Rajkumar Debendranath. Upon knowing that, their father instructs Manjulika to be burnt alive as a punishment!
Just as when things seem to get settle down, there enters Mandira Devi (Madhuri Dixit), who happens to be ‘Suryagadh ki mahadevi’ and Malika (Vidya Balan), who happens to be a historian who specialises in restoring priceless monuments. Between all the chaos, Ruhan gets to know that there is no daughter of the Maharaja, but two!
So, who is the second daughter of the maharaja, who on earth is the real Munjalika, is Munjalika more than what meets the eye, will Ruhan find his way to get out of the Bhool Bhulaiyaa and many more questions get answered and revealed as the film goes by!
First things first. Hats off to Anees Bazmee and team for having come up with such a ‘cracker’ of a film and that too on Diwali! Even though Anees Bazmee’s direction is not completely flawless, it will not be wrong to say that, it's near-flawless! Be it his direction or screenplay (Aakash Kaushik, who has also penned the dialogues), the film neither does wander here and there (read ‘go astray’), nor does it let your attention do that!
Full marks to the film’s cinematography (Manu Anand) and also the entire VFX team for having created a make-believe world. You get so engrossed with the Ruhan’s life and its proceedings that, at times, you land up forgetting that it’s a film! The film did require a bit of editing (esp in the first half). The film’s second half is totally outstanding!
Only a seasoned filmmaker can create the kind of climax that Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3 has. The last film which had a similar unexpected climax was the Vijay Sethupathy starrer Maharaja. Who would, except for Anees Bazmee, could have thought of a dance-off between two legends – Madhuri Dixit and Vidya Balan, which is definitely one of the not to be missed highlights of the film!
As for the performances, it’s a Kartik Aaryan show all the way. He makes no mistakes in the film. Be it his dialogue delivery, emotional scenes, funny ones (lots of them), this young man aces them all. Plus, with this film, he has also proved what a great dancer he is! Despite having a late entry, Madhuri Dixit more than makes up for it with her grace, acting and dance!
Vidya Balan, as always, exudes a power packed performance! Amidst all of them, there’s the svelte Triptii Dimri, who makes the most of the screen space allotted to her! Besides all of them, there are the usual suspects- the veteran actors Sanjay Mishra, Vijay Raaz, Rajpal Yadav, Ashwini Kalsekar and others who help in taking the film forward.
The film’s music (Tanishq Baghchi and a bunch of others) is good, but not outstanding. There are a couple of tracks that are hummable, but lack recall value. But the film’s background score does wonders to the film and the narrative!
All in all, Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3 has all the potential to be a blockbuster at the box office. Also, considering that, the Shraddha Kapoor Stree 2 worked miraculously at the box office and since, Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3 also treads on the same genre, it should be able to ‘cast a spell’ at the box office… effortlessly!
