Over the years we have seen many homosexual characters in Bollywood films. Sadly most were only a part of the story for comic relief and were not represented in the right way. But the industry has evolved and characters are now being written more sensitively and realistically. There is no unnecessary limp in the hand, no funny running sequences. The aim today is to break stereos and educate the society about the LGBTQIA community. Well, let’s take a moment to celebrate some characters that attempted to change unevolved mentalities with their on-screen personas.
Rahul Kapoor from Kapoor & Sons
It is a popular ‘belief’ that you can guess a person’s sexuality by their mannerisms-- the stereotypical limp hand or ‘walk’. Well, heartthrob Fawad Khan portrayed the role of a homosexual man who had to keep his love life a secret from his entire family. You see him and you can’t tell what his sexual preference is-- obviously! So much so that during the course of the film, not just us but even Alia Bhatt fell for him. Clearly the way an individual looks has nothing to do with his/her sexuality.Aman Tripathi of Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan
Jitendra Kumar and Ayushmann Khurrana played lovers in the film who are caught in an intimate moment by the former’s father. Later Jitendra aka Aman’s parents told him ‘yeh galatfehmi hai’. He then explained how this is not a phase or a misunderstanding. Its how he feels and what comes naturally! This is not a disease. The society needs to understand this and even if it doesn’t, just remember-- my sexuality is my sexuality, none of your sexuality.Rimjhim Jongkey from Badhaai Do
Chum Darang portrayed the role of Bhumi Pednekar aka Sumi’s on-screen love interest. Lesbians are often associated with short hair and playing sports. Well, Rimjhim was quite the opposite. But she was still very much in love with Sumi. The best part about this film, the romantic scenes have been shot beautifully-- they give you butterflies in the stomach and feel magical!Shardul Thakur in Badhaai Do
In our society, it is a belief that homosexual men have colorful wardrobes with over the top clothing, or accents and a vocabulary full of fancy words. Well, Rajkummar Rao’s character is a cop with a virile accent, badass attitude and a killer physique to drool over. He is a treat to watch and the scenes where he shares the screen with Gulshan Devaiah, the surprise package in the film, are adorable!Sweety in Ek Ladki Ko Dekha Toh Aisa Laga
There are sadly many who refuse to believe that we are born the way we are. Our sexual preference is not something we pick up on the way and it is certainly not a phase. Well Sweety, played by Sonam Kapoor Ahuja, had the same feelings since she was eight years old. She knew she was attracted to girls, dreamt of marrying one when she was older but had to hide her truth. Her feelings are as natural and normal as any other individual’s.
