2022 has been a harsh year for Bollywood, however, it was particularly difficult for these celebrities who failed to mark with what they do best.
Bollywood crumbled under the pressure of catering to the evolving sensibilities of cinegoers on 2022. For the first time since the pandemic struck, did the industry see normalcy return to the cinemas but alas the products put up for display failed to attract sufficient audience attention to make it worthwhile. Additionally, not a single Bollywood film managed to even compete with the projects conceived in the South with films like RRR and K.G.F 2 breaking unimaginable milestones in the first half itself.
Serving partly dated ideas, to mega budget projects that crashed and failed without ample consideration, 2022 wasn’t the year of Hindi cinema. As the industry took blows one after the other the box office, the year has to be especially hurtful for these Bollywood celebrities who failed at finding success in formulas that have brought them to the top.
John Abraham – Action
Not once but twice this year, John’s attempt at action failed to attract audiences to cinema halls. In April, the actor’s film Attack released and despite a futuristic concept involving the star playing a super soldier, it failed to make any progress at the ticket windows. In a second attempt, John butted heads with actor Arjun Kapoor in a Ek Villain Returns. Despite the erotic thriller vibe that the movie carried, the movie failed to excite the audiences.Akshay Kumar – Patriotism/ comedy
2022 has been particularly harsh on Akshay Kumar whose varied attempts at winning over the audience failed magnificently. The actor who started the year with a comedy, a genre a formula he seldom fails in, Bachcchan Paandey was crushed at the box office with competition from RRR and The Kashmir Files. Later in the year, Akshay did go back to his tried and test formula of bringing movies with a patriotic tinge like Ram Setu and Samrat Prithviraj but that didn’t pan out for him either.Ayushmann Khurana – Social messaging
Ayushmann has a way of picking up the most refreshing scripts which usually challenge social norms. With three releases this year, Anek, Doctor G and An Action Hero, Ayushmann also failed to strike box office gold. He was, however, highly praised for his film selection, risks and performance in An Action Hero which was the last of films to release in 2022.Aamir Khan – Family entertainers
Several hopes of the audience and the industry were pinned on Aamir Khan and his wholesome remake of Tom Hanks’ Forrest Gump. The movie arrived after a long delay in August 2023 and despite being a family entertainer that the masses were craving, the film failed to make any big splash at the box office. The failure of Laal Singh Chaddha was not only a big shock for the industry but has also pushed Aamir to take a break from films and carefully consider his next project.Rohit Shetty – Comedy
Hailed as Bollywood’s saviour last year, Rohit Shetty expanded his comedy universe with Cirkus starring Ranveer Singh in a double role. This adaptation of Shakespeare’s ‘The Comedy of Errors’ is taking a beating the at the box office presently after failing to impress the audience with the story despite having a stellar cast.Tiger Shroff – Action
It would have been epic if Tiger Shroff managed to grip the attention of the audience with Heropanti 2 as he did when he made his debut with the original in 2014. The movie which was much bigger in scale compared to his debut film and designed to put his action abilities on display, bombed at the box office and how in April 2022.
