Ayushmann Khurrana tasted box office success with the majority of films in his career spanning more than a decade. However, a few of his films didn’t get a wider audience and much-deserved attention despite having a powerful storyline and performance.
Ayushmann Khurrana’s filmography boasts of some unique and freshly crafted scripts that have social messages. Beginning from Vicky Donor to Dream Girl 2, the actor carved a niche for himself as an unconventional actor who backs eccentric storylines highlighting taboos attached to premature balding, the LGBTQ+ community, overweight, and erectile dysfunction among others. He tasted box office success with the majority of films in his career spanning more than a decade. However, a few of his films didn’t get a wider audience and much-deserved attention despite having a powerful storyline and performance. Here, we enlist his movies which deserved more love.
Meri Pyaari Bindu
Released in 2017, Meri Pyaari Bindu explores a bittersweet love story between two childhood friends who have totally opposite perspectives of life. The movie is a resemblance to life that whatever we idolize in life, we can't get those things. It’s better to accept the truth and move on. Directed by Akshay Roy, the film features Ayushmann and Parineeti Chopra in lead roles. Upon release, the movie faded away by all the attention bestowed on the Baahubali sequel. Had there been no big movie competition, it may have done better.
Shubh Mangal Saavdhan
After Vicky Donor, Ayushmann broke another stereotype by essaying the character who suffers from erectile dysfunction in the 2017 film Shubh Mangal Saavdhan. The plot revolves around a shy boy, Mudit who undergoes a setback after he discovers his erectile dysfunction after marriage with Sugandha, played by Bhumi Pednekar. The film focuses on an important subject that deserved a wide audience, however, it tanked at the box office.
Chandigarh Kare Aashiqui
Ayushmann Khurrana and Vaani Kapoor-starrer Chandigarh Kare Aashiqui portrays the romance between a middle-class boy and a transgender woman. Directed by Abhishek Kapoor, the film takes up taboo subjects to bring a change in society, however, the film failed to make an impact. Upon lukewarm response to the film, Ayushmann felt homophobia and anti-trans attitude had a role to play in its failure. Doctor G
With Anubhuti Kashyap’s directorial, Ayushmann took up another chance to break the gender-stereotype role. The film is about the struggles of a medical student who is interested in orthopaedics but instead becomes a gynaecologist and the ensuing chaos. The film also stars Rakul Preet Singh and Shefali Shah in pivotal roles. Though the film is the perfect blend of humour and emotions with an underlying social message, it couldn’t pull the audience to the theatres. An Action Hero
Despite receiving mostly positive critic reviews, the movie underperformed at the box office. The plot revolves around an action film star who goes on the run after accidentally killing the brother of a ruthless politician. It is a revenge story featuring Ayushmann alongside Jaideep Ahlawat. The film is a wild ride filled with black comedy, suspense, satire and high-octane action sequences which strike the right balance. However, it failed to impress the mass audience, apparently poor promotion should be blamed for it.
