Shazam! Review: The Humour And Fun Makes This One Of The Best DCEU Movies Ever!

What would happen if you were suddenly granted the powers of a superhero? What would you choose- invisibility or flight? These have been the questions that almost all of us pondered upon. But what if that became a reality? Well, that is exactly what Billy Batson is faced with when he meets the wizard named Shazam. But would he be capable enough to handle the powers given to him at an age of just 14?

Well, Shazam! is an origin story like no other. Part of the credit goes to the fact that this one isn't all about action and momentous decisions taken, but light-hearted humorous moments that you expect teenagers to indulge in that makes this film one of its kind and also one of the best origin stories of DCEU . This film is all about funny moments of self-discovery rather than a serious overtone of sacrifice and saving the world from evil. Billy does fight the evil Dr. Sivana, but he has his own reason and cause attached to it, rather than some 'greater cause'.This tone in superhero films, without superhero syndrome, is rare to see and it is delightful.

The film rests a lot on the performance of Zachery Levi who is the grown and beefed up version of the 14-year-old Billy Batson when he utters the magical word 'Shazam!'. He plays the character with a child-like glee on his face that makes the entire film charming throughout. After all, Shazam! is not a grown superhero who has faced the trial and tribulations of the adult life, or has lost the innocence, like the villain Sivana has. Even in the middle of an intense fight, he is just happy to have discovered another superpower in him. Levi keeps this glee alive in every frame, putting conviction into the character of Billy. But the film can be called complete with the performance of Jack Dylan Grazer complimenting him as Freddie Freeman. He is the foster brother who helps him discover his powers. In his own words, he is the supercool sidekick, like Robin has been to Batman!

The film is excellent in every way possible, and a delight to watch. You will enjoy every bit of Shazam! The change in tone in this DCEU film is refreshing in every way possible, and this is better than most origin stories that have been brought out, barring maybe Wonder Woman!  Shazam! is all about magic and so is the film!

P.S- There is a cameo by Superman!
