Some say that films are made solely to entertain viewers, while others feel that ‘entertainment’ is only one of the points in the checklist of making a good movie. Well, Arjun Kapoor , Neena Gupta and Rakul Preet Singh starrer Sardar Ka Grandson will be able to wow audiences from both the categories. Written by Anuja Chauhan and Kaashvie Nair, the romantic comedy drama marks the latter’s feature debut. It broadly follows the story of a grandson who goes to great lengths to fulfill his grandmother’s last wish. However, it’s the tidbits you have to look out for, which will definitely leave you impressed.

The film begins with a break up. Arjun aka Amreek Singh doesn’t quite care about others and their attachments. His fiancé and business partner Radha , played by Rakul, is tired of his attitude. So when he tells her that this is how he is, take it or leave it, Radha goes with the latter. While he is dealing with his break up, he gets a call from his father Gurkeerat Singh, played by Kanwaljit Singh, asking him to return to Amritsar as his grandmother Sardar aka Neena is unwell and wishes to go to Lahore. She wants to see her house one last time, which she left behind after partition. Amreek agrees to take her but due to a hilarious reason she is blacklisted from Pakistan, hence her visa application is denied.

That’s when Amreek does something which was already revealed in the trailer-- he decides to take the house from Lahore to Amritsar as a surprise gift for her. He is also reunited with Radha, who helps him fulfill his grandmother’s dream. But why would anybody go to such lengths? Could it be the greed for property, or a grandson’s love for his grandmother? Well, no. The answer is simple-- Arjun understood the void that his on-screen grandmother Neena felt after losing her husband. The same void Amreek felt in the few days/weeks of his breakup. That may sound ‘filmy’ or even amusing, but the fact that this has been shown in such a subtle yet sweet way wins our heart. Then there’s Sardar aka Neena’s obsession with a particular whiskey which will leave you in splits.

As we mentioned in the headline, Neena Gupta shines as the 90 year old, young at heart grandmother who will add you to her wasiyat (will) if you’re nice enough to her. Arjun and Rakul have also done a great job, but at times it may seem like they are being a tad too dramatic. But hello, it’s a Bollywood film and itna toh banta hai! Their chemistry is adorable and we really hope to see them together on-screen more often. Kanwaljit Singh and Soni Razdan are super cute as Amreek’s parents, whereas Kumud Mishra aces the antagonist’s role. Young actor Mir Mehroos, who turns out to be Arjun’s first friend in Pakistan, is also a good addition to the cast. Last but definitely not the least, Aditi Rao Hydari and John Abraham as the young Sardar and her husband-- they will win your heart and their dialogue delivery is off the charts.

The locations and camera angles chosen are also well-thought of. However the action scenes could have been better and slightly more realistic. Nevertheless, this is the perfect film to sit and watch with your family during the pandemic because it will help you take your mind off things. It will also warm your heart thanks to the overflowing emotions and will leave a smile on your face. What more can we ask for?
