Good Newwz Movie Review: Kareena-Akshay's Chemistry And Diljit-Kiara's Punjabiyat Makes This A Funny And Entertaining Film
The trailer of the film had already created huge buzz and fans, including me were eagerly waiting for the movie and hoping dearly that it would indeed live up to the expectation. Well, the good news is that it does.
The story of the film is exactly what we saw the in the trailer thus there is no point in discussing it further. Beyond that the story has a nice message but les us not delve into that but instead talk a little about the performances which makes the film what it is.
At the onset it is absolutely necessary to acknowledge how incredibly gorgeous Kareena Kapoor is and Kiara Advani no less. With costumes designed by Aki Narula, both the ladies look absolutely stunning and there is no way not notice that.
Moving on to perhaps the best thing about the film, the chemistry between Akshay Kumar and Kareena Kapoor. Their chemistry not only looks lived in but also has a amazing warmth and effervesence to it that comes from a genuine sense of comfort. Together, they make Varun and Deepti Batra a couple that we all know and love and despite quirks can't help but love and even be inspired by a little. They are by no means perfect but that is what makes them real and hence incredibly enjoyable.
Akshay Kumar who has been sticking to a certain template off late, does something refreshing in the film and it is not just the comedy that he aces but he manages to bring certain layers to Varun Batra that does not reduce him to a stereotype.
Kareena Kapoor, in my personal opionion, is the show stealer of the film and goes through every beat of her character with an elegance that comes so naturally to her. In one important scene, especially, when she talks about the extremely real challenges of pregnancy, she is simply marvellous and it is undeniable that being a mother in real life has had immense effect on her, at least in when it comes to this role.
Talking about the other couple, Diljit Dosanjh and Kiara Advani also hold their end of the bargain pretty well. As Honey and Monika Batra, the typical loud-mouthed couple from Chandigarh, they are cutesy and a tad bit annoying as they ought to be. While Diljit brings his ineffable charm in every frame and matches his comic timing with Akshay, Kiara is a little out of her comfort zone but manages pretty well. Comedy is surely not her pet genre but there are other scenes in the film where she shines and brings a certain vulnerability and innocence that instantly melts your heart.
Coming to the direction, Raj Mehta, to his credit, knows the story he wants to tell and his audience. The gags are funny, especially the banter between Akshay and Kareena are all very well crafted and seems genuine. Things do get uncomfortable at times and it certainly lacks the sharpness of Vicky Donor and Badhaai Ho , buthe eventually manages to land it where it should.
However, there a couple of minute problems in the film. While the screenplay is mostly taut, the change of tone, and a massive one at that, happens rather suddenly. Not just that, the jokes do have a niche geographical appeal and to be honest, fart jokes might be funny to some, but it is not universal.
To sum it up, Good Newwz is a fairly entertaining and highly watchable film and if not for anything else, see it for the absoute delight that Akshay and Kareena's magical chemistry.
