Aquaman Movie Review: Jason Momoa's Film Is A Visual Wonder And An Engrossing Origin Story That You Shouldn't Miss
Walked in solely to admire the hotness that Jason Mamoa is but walked out appreciating a wholesome experience of watching a visual marvel that is Aquaman. Post Wonder Woman with Gal Gadot , DC has found a stronghold in great origin stories and Aquaman is another step in solidifying that position. Well, to be honest after the blunder that Justice League turned out to be, Aquaman is a wonderful bounce back.
As far as the story goes, it’s just another walk through the making of a superhero, with messed up parental issues but the visuals just get you bowled over and that is where you lose yourself in the movie. The great kingdom of Atlantis in the deep of the oceans is mesmerizing visually and way more advanced than the world of us surface dwellers, but a lot less forgiving. With King Olm leading the charge, surface dwellers face a threat of a war. The only way to stop him is that his half-brother, Arthur the son of Queen Atlanna from the oceans and a lighthouse keeper from the surface Thomas Curry takes his rightful place as the king and bring peace to both worlds. But in order to do that he must prove himself worthy. The film is set in the post Justice League time frame and Arthur has already earned a name for himself as a crusader on the surface and quietly continues to do so.
The action in Aquaman is gripping and something that you don’t want to miss even a moment of. Amber Heard as Mera is quite impressive in that department in places even more than Aquaman himself. From starting a search for the trident of King Atlan to the final face-off between Arthur and King Olm the action just keeps getting better. The action and visual effects combined turn this ordinary tale into an extraordinary one.
The movie has some witty sequences that keep it from becoming grim and then there are some sequences that become unintentionally funny like the one where Arthur and Mera step out of the ocean in full Baywatch style. If you’re Bollywood fan you will feel that this movie has some big-time drama inspo from there in scenes. The direction and editing are crisp and the film doesn’t seem like it drags even with a run time of 2 hours and 22 minutes.
The performances are stunners and the casting couldn’t have been better. You would still walk out drooling over Jason Momoa ’s roguish hotness but also thoroughly entertained and impressed with DC’s redemption Aquaman! Can’t wait to see more of these guys in the future.
