Annabelle Comes Home Review: The Film Is Too Benign For Conjuring Universe Fans!

Back in 2017, I went to the theatre late at night to watch Annabelle Creations.  Totally unnecessary, but I had to take company to muster the courage to watch this one ( I let go of Annabelle in the theatres because I was living alone then), and I remember covering my face and my eyes often and screaming in the theatre while watching it. The jump scares of this one were spot on and I thought I shat because man, I was scared. So, while going for Annabelle Comes Home, I had mentally prepared myself and even sat with my eyes half covered. But alas, the film was so benign that I was barely scared, and I am one of those btw who get scared easily!

The Annabelle series, which is an extended part of the Conjuring universe, is not as terrible as The Nun. Yes, it doesn’t have those jump scare which will frighten you out of your wits, but is saved by a storyline that will keep you gripped throughout the runtime. The narrative is linear and even though a number of evil is unleashed upon a kid and three teenagers, it cannot manage to make you jump out of your seats. You’d know what is going to happen and would want to follow the three, later turned to four, into the journey and know at what point did they manage to rescue themselves.

Probably the most scary part was the introductory scene where Lorraine Warren realizes what extent of evil the cursed doll is capable of. Otherwise, there are moments, like the doorbell scene, that had potential to turn into sh*t scary moment, but was mildly let go off. The real action starts much later onto the film, but it does not take a break neck tempo that I remember its 2017 predecessor do, and maintains the gentle pace.

There was, in fact, even such a part where I was reminded of the last installment of the Insidious. Well, this one was a good potential that was let go off.

If you have enjoyed the jump scares and the horror that the Conjuring Universe has invoked so far, then this one would be super mild for your taste, that will barely tease your senses. But this one isn’t utterly useless, that would make you feel that you have wasted your time. It runs at a linear pace, rarely gaining momentum, but will keep you hooked with suspense.

If you are one of those who cannot take jump scares, this one is a good point to begin. If you love to be frightened out of your wits, then this one isn’t too perfect for you; but then again, you can spare time and money for this installment of the Conjuring Universe, even though just once!
