Martin Scorsese to receive special honour from Los Angeles County Museum of Art’s annual Art + Film Gala
This is a revolutionary time in the world of cinema. The bond between Los Angeles County Museum of Art and the film industry is growing with passing time and it’s evident from the fact that the museum has chosen filmmaker Martin Scorsese as one of their honorees.
The much-awaited day will arrive on November 2 when Scorsese will attend as an honoree at the museum’s third annual Art+Film Gala. He will be accompanied with his fellow honoree artist David Hockney. The criticism of the museum made by the director four years ago is not to be forgotten ever. The director sent an open letter to the museum and its director Michael Govan with criticism of the museum’s decision of cutting off its traditional weekend film screening program. Scorsese wrote, “People from all over the world are speaking out, because they see this action -- correctly, I think -- as a serious rebuke to film within the context of the art world.”

Since then the authorities have been seeking reconciliation with Hollywood. In the process they appointed Elvis Mitchell to host a new screening program. There have been many more developments including the announcement that Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences would open its museum at LACMA campus. The annual gala show will be co-hosted by LACMA trustee Eva Chow and actor Leonardo DiCaprio and the latter has been instrumental in selecting Scorsese as an honoree, undoubtedly. Leonardo, who has worked with the director in films like Gangs of New York, The Aviator, The Departed and the latest one The Wolf of Wall Street, stated, “I am thrilled to have my dear friend join us at LACMA and to celebrate his astounding cinematic legacy and leadership in preserving film for future generations.” The evening will be sponsored by Gucci for the third consecutive year.
