Unmatchable charm and Punjabi songs that can get anyone grooving––that’s how most know actor, singer Diljit Dosanjh. Sadly Confluence, the annual cultural fest of Hansraj College, didn’t get to see much of this. The Punjab based actor-singer was the star performer on the final day of the fest, which saw around 10,000 students. But, due to security lapses and a gas cylinder leak, and he had to leave the college amid a stampede like situation.

Dosanjh, who was recently in town for a promotional tour for his movie, says that he was scared when he saw the massive crowd at the college. “Hansraj mein maine bhi bahut dhakhe khaye the. Kyunki jab main vaha pahucha to itna crowd tha ki mujhe car se stage tak pahuchne main 10 minute lage the. Mujhe dar lag rha tha ki main stage tak kaise pahuchu aur agar pahucha to utru kaise (I was pushed around in Hansraj too. It took me about 10 minutes to reach the stage from my car because of the crowd. I was scared whether I’ll even make it to the stage, and if I’ll ever make it off it)”

The crowd had students waiting for the singer for four to five hours, some had come for the concert of their favourite singer all the way from Amritsar.

Dosanjh says that he was apprehensive about the situation from the moment he got on stage. “Pehle hi crowd ko dekhkar darr lag raha tha par, mujhe nahi pta tha ki cylinder fat jayega aur dusre hi gaane main bhagna padega (I was already pretty scared when I saw the crowd and had no idea that I’ll have to leave in the middle of my second song onstage).” The singer also added that more than himself, he was worried that someone in the crowd might get hurt and he would be blamed. “I didn’t want anyone to get hurt, varna agle din banda bolega ki Diljit ke concert pe chot lag gayi. That would have really upset me.” The singer also issued a statement post the concert for all those who attended, and promised to come back and perform for the Delhi crowd.

Dosanjh says that things have changed, after his performance at Hansraj. He will ensure that the safety and management will be handled by his team. “Earlier, my team used to look after the sound setup and music system, but after the incident, the team will also keep a tab on stage and crowd security too,” he says.
