These Differences Between Sairat And Dhadak Are Surprising Beyond Our Comprehension
Updated : June 15, 2018 04:30 PM ISTAfter the trailer of the much-awaited Dhadak was launched yesterday, we can barely think about anything else. Ishaan Khatter and Jahnvi Kapoor’s palpalable on-screen chemistry is has overnight become as popular as their off-screen camaraderie. The picturesque and gorgeous trailer has fuelled our interest for the film that we were anyway holding in-check ever since the project was announced.
But while watching the trailer of the films we could not help but forget that it is the Hindi remake of the national award-winning Marathi film Sairat. The feel of the two movies is so different that it is would be interesting to see how Dhadak justifies being the Hindi remake of Sairat.
Here are the major differences between Sairat and Dhadak that we can already see.
The Title
The first difference that instantly jumps out at you is the difference in the title of the film. The meaning of the word ‘Sairat’ translated from Marathi means wild or unrestrained. Justifying the title of the movie, love story of Sairaat was less about romance and more about the unchained spirit of innocent love that is fierce and does not care about social restrictions. However, in the remake, the word ‘Dhadak’ and Karan Johar’s involvement clearly foreshadows a heavier dose of romance that its Marathi counterpart.
Backdrop
This is one is perhaps a little obvious. The Marathi counterpart was obviously based on the backdrop of Maharashtra, while the backdrop of the Hindi remake Dhadak is Rajasthan. It is not just the change of backdrop that is different, but the essence of the film would be majorly different given the stark cultural differences between Maharashtra and Rajasthan.
Caste Reference
There has been a lot of dialogue around this aspect of the film. While the overarching theme of Sairat was a story of caste-based differences and violence, the aspect of caste has been completely done away with in Dhadak. It would be interesting to see how Dhadak would be an adaptation of Sairat without a caste angle which was essentially a film about caste discrimination.
The Raw Appeal
The ones who have seen Sairat can vouch for its raw and rugged appeal. From casting absolute non-actors to keeping the terrains of a small Maharashtrian village almost unchained, there was not an ounce of gloss or glamour in the film. Even the wardrobe of the cast had that authentic feel to it, however, in Dhadak the cast are not as raw given Ishaan has already done Beyond The Clouds and Jahnvi’s lineage and preparation has always been in the direction of being a Bollywood actress. Plus, given it’s a Karan Johar production we can definitely expect a lot of gorgeous clothes and glamorous ornamentation to the narrative of the film.
Shashank Khaitaan v/s Nagraj Manjule
The national-award winning Sairat was directed by the massively talented Nagraj Manjule whose first film Fundry also garnered a lot of critical appreciation is totally different from the director of Dhadak, Shashank Khaitaan who is popular for directing superhit commercial entertainers such as Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania and Badrinath Ki Dulhaniya. Given their drastically difference sense of aesthetics and movie making, it would be interesting to see to see such different treatments of the same story.
