Someone as ordinary as you and me are catapulted to instant stardom and it truly looks like fairytale taking shape. However, in reality, most reality show contestants and even winner do not stand the test of time and quickly fades into oblivion. The ones that do gather recognition mostly work within domestic markets, but there are a few who not only dreamt big but also went actually global and received even international recognition and praises.
Here are a few reality show contestants who went global and received international recognition.

While most people would know Shantanu Maheshwari as Swayam from Channel V’s show Dil Dosti Dance, many would not know that he actually participated in Boogie Woogie. After making his presence felt in both fiction and non-fiction shows in India, Shantanu is on his mission of acquiring global fame.

Remember how all of us were enthralled seeing Varun Dhawan and Shradhha Kapoor’s ABCD 2. The story of a small time dancing group Mumbai winning one of world’s prestigious dance championships was not only a spectacle but also a inspiring tale of passion, talent and ambition. Sounds like a dream right? How about we tell you it is a true story that the film is based. Yes, ABCD 2 is based on Mumbai based dance group from Nalasopara named Fictitious Dance Group.
Unlike the film, the group did not win but it still hold the distinction of being the first Indian dance troupe to compete at the prestigious World Hip Hop Championship in 2006. Although they finished eighth, nevertheless they inspired lakhs and lakhs of Indian dancers to dream big. They were accused of copying Phillipines All Star and did not do too well at the Indian dance show ‘Chak Dhoom Dhoom’. But despite all odds they managed to raise 25 lakhs required for the competition and went where no Indian dancer has ever gone before.
He has the distinction of being the winner of Indian Idol’s first season. The show that literally changed the way India looked at singing reality show was one of the most popular shows in TV in the mid 2000s. Amidst a lot of fanfare and cheering Abhijeet Sawant from Maharashtra defeated Amit Sana to emerge as the champion and was instantly a reality star. He went on to sing a few songs in Bollywood and even starred in a film called Lottery and made a special appearance in Akshay Kumar’s Tees Maar Khan, but many do not know about his stint in Asian Idol.
Abhijeet Sawant went on to compete in Asian Idol and finished third in the contest. In fact, during his stint on the show he was nervous about singing in English. Talking about his experience, he said in an interview, “The contestants will sing three local songs and three English songs. I'm not worried about Hindi songs but going live in front of huge audiences and that too in English is making me tense. I'm therefore now going in for some training. From tomorrow a singer is going to help me with the required skills. And above all we have to co-ordinate with the local band, whether we like it or not."
Anybody who is a little familiar with dance scene in India has surely heard about Shakti Mohan. This talented dancer went on to win second season of Dance India Dance by beating Dharmesh, which was an achievement in itself. She later went on to appear in several dance based reality shows and even did a superhit item number in Akshay Kumar’s Rowdy Rathore. In fact, Bollywood stars such as Parineeti Chopra has declared being a fan of Shakti Mohan, but do you know she was part of a prestigious international project?
In 2012, she collaborated with composer Mohammad Fairouz for Cultural Collaboration project in New York sponsored by BBC. Fairouz composes a four-minute piece, played by the American String Quartet and renowned clarinet player David Krakauer, for which Mohan choreoraphed and performed a dance fusing classical Indian and contemporary dance moves. The project was greatly appreciated and Shakti received some serious international praises. Back home, she has produced albums with two of her star sisters Neeti and Mukti Mohan and also runs a channel on YouTube where she teaches dancing.
This svelte and gorgeous model from Pune literally took our breath away in the third season of India’s Next Top Model. Although Summer did not win the show, she surely won a ton of hearts. She was one of the top five in the show and was seen in small projects after the show as well. Her instagram is full of super hot pictures and she is dating Raghav Puri and the two make quite a cool couple. However, what most people do not know about Summer that she represented India in prestigious modeling contest and did pretty well there too.
Summer represented India at 10th Annual Supermodel Production in2017 where she battled with models from 50 other countries for the coveted title. Talking about her stint in INTM, the model said, “My journey at India's next top model was by far the most amazing thing that has happened to me because I've always watched America's next top model and wished that it happened in India and when it did, I auditioned. Though it was a lot of hard work to get through the auditions, but it was another achievement added to my list. The experience was nothing like I may ever think of doing in my life, the challenges and tasks and the exposure or the people who taught us and shot with us, all of it combined made me feel like this is what I'm meant for, this is me.”
