Here's Everything You Need To Know About Dangal Actress Zaira Wasim's Apology And Why It Is A Big Deal!

Dangal became a box office breakthrough after the film broke all previously held records and became the highest grossing Bollywood film ever. The film is an inspiring real life tale of Haryana’s Mahavir Phogat who invested in his two girls and trained them to be world class wrestlers when nobody around him showed that kind of faith in their girls.

The recent pinning down of Kashmiri girl Zaira Wasim for choosing a career as an actress and the massive trolls on Twitter over her being termed as an inspiration by Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti, reflect how the strong message of her film has had no effect what so ever on her own people. 16 years old Zaira played young Geeta Phogat in Aamir Khan’s Dangal and was much appreciated for her part well done.

She recently left her followers thoroughly confused when she posted a long apology over some “recent actions” taken up by her or over “the people” she recently met. She wrote -

This is an open confession/apology. I know that many people have been offended and displeased by my recent actions or by the people I have recently met.

I want to apologise to all those people who I've unintentionally hurt and I want them to know that I understand their sentiments behind it especially considering that what had happened over the past 6 months but I hope people can also understand there are certain circumstances that emerge which one cannot control and I hope people still remember that I'm a just a 16 year old girl and I hope you treat me accordingly. I'm sorry for what I did but it was not a deliberate decision and I really hope people can forgive me.

There are few more things which are very important and I want to clear them as well. The first and foremost thing is that I am being projected as a role model for Kashmiri Youth. I want to make it very clear that I do not want anyone to follow in my footsteps or even consider me as a role model. I'm not proud of what I'm doing and I want everyone, especially the Youth to know that there are real role models out there whether they be in this time or in our history.

To even consider me as a role model would be disgracing them and their disgrace would be OUR DISGRACE! I do not wish to start an argument here, this was a just a mere confession from my end which I really wanted people to know. May Allah bless us and guide us.

Zaira became the target of some radical Muslims of her state a few months back when her trimmed hair look from the movie started doing the rounds on social media. These people believed that she disgraced her community by opting to become an actress. When pictures of her meeting with J&K Chief Mehbooba Mufti on January 15^thsurfaced people left no stone unturned in making sure she felt guilty of it.

Zaira met Mehbooba Mufti with her parents and shared her experience of working in Dangal and how big a learning experience it was for her. The Chief Minister who herself faces some severe criticism in the state, said that Ziara was inspiration for her people. Mocked and trolled over Twitter, Ziara posted this note.

Her name was plastered on all leading channels and soon it started a wave of support in her favor where several people including many Bollywood celebrities and ex Chief Minister of Kashmir Omar Abdullah blamed the haters for pinning down a 16 year old and threatening her. An apology wasn’t certainly required according those supporting her and some even speculated that she wrote the long letter under some sort of pressure.

Zaira had however bought down that note and wrote another one clarifying that she wasn’t compelled for anything she did and later she pulled that down as well. Ziara will next be seen in Aamir Khan’s Secret Superstar. Her second note read as -

"Regarding my last post, I have no idea why this has become such a big issue. I just wanted to make sure that I did not hurt anyone’s feelings and all of a sudden it has turned into national news. Again and again, I am telling people that I have not been forced into anything by anyone. This was post was not meant against anyone, just wanted to make sure that people were not hurt by what I was doing. From media to everyone else, please don’t blow this out of proportion. Neither was I forced (to apologise) nor am I against anyone. Hopefully this post just stops this once and for all.”

Actor Aamir Khan who played her on screen father in Dangal issued a statement on the matter and encouraged the young actress to go on as she is and appealed to people at large to respect her choices and leave her alone. 

While Ziara is torn between overwhelming support and hatred, the matter has certainly brought to the surface a very important matter facing the integrity of ambitious young from the Kashmir Valley.

The state has been facing phase of unrest for nearly 7 months now, since the death of the popular militant commander Burhan Wani, who was shot dead by Indian forces.
