20 Films That Were Unexpected Hits In Bollywood!

In fact, at the end of the year if we sit to recall the blockbusters that we remember, the names can be counted on our finger tips!
It’s pretty easy to draw a line between the big banner, big budget movies that are heavily promoted and the small budget movies that are only slightly promoted, but what works with audiences is what only the audiences know! We have seen films from the biggest banners sink like the recent example of Baar Baar Dekho , and the small films like Vicky Donor becoming popular hits!
Here’s a list of movies that we never expected would emerge as box office winners but they surprised us with their performances!
Mujhe Kuch Kuch Kehna Hai – The romantic drama was Tusshar Kapoor’s debut in Bollywood. The film which also starred Kareena Kapoor had unnecessary twists and the melodrama did no good to the plot! The film that we expected would bomb surprised us being a mega success in 2002.

No Entry – A multi starrer project with Salman Khan, Anil Kapoor and Fardeen Khan posing as cheating husbands was the laugh riot of 2005! It never crossed our imagination that it would be a commercial success before it hit the theatres.
Vivaah – Shahid Kapoor and Amrita Rao starrer was just another sanskari story of a couple that we expected would pass without much attention. But the simplicity of the story perhaps drew the audiences and the film faired a good response at the box office.

Kya Kool Hain Hum – A low budget film which was no one’s idea of a hit! The entire movie was coded in double meaning, but it surprisingly clicked with the audiences and we had to bear two more of its kind in the future!

Golmaal – The 2006 blockbuster was no doubt an underdog winner that year. Rohit Shetty’s multi starrer no doubt tickled our funny bone all the way to be a hit at the box office! The expectations and buzz of the film was next to nothing but it is now an entire series.

Malamaal Weekly – A small budget, not fancy names in the star cast, but the situational comedy led us to laugh till we were crying! A silent winner at the box office.

A Wednesday – A grim yet thrilling subject and an acclaimed cast was sufficient for this film to draw the audiences! Very unlikely in most matters, yet the film was a silent box office success.
Oye Lucky Lucky Oye – One of the lucky box office hits of 2008. This black comedy had not buzz and no big cast to boast of and yet it attracted audiences and marched to be a box office hit.

Tanu Weds Manu – A low key project, the film was a total entertainer! We loved the performances and the story and without much attention seeking the film became a hit with the audiences. We loved the second installment of the film as well.

Pyaar Ka Punchnama – A with a fresh cast, aiming a modern day relationships or more like a male rattle, the film was unexpectedly refreshing and audiences loved it! While it was expected to pass off without much attention it surprised us being a hit!

Kahaani – With a female lead and a mysterious plot, the film had really low expectations to impress. But the intriguing subject attracted audiences and made it a definite success commercially as well.

English Vinglish – Sridevi’s comeback to bollywood, this film with a low budget and a low buzz won our hearts. The simple plot was really hard hitting and had good performances; it certainly impressed the audiences and was commercial success as well.

Vicky Donor – A subject not many would touch, this film based on sperm donation was not only low on budget but also not expected to be so popular with the audiences. Yet surprise surprise! Commendable treatment of the subject which is otherwise was a taboo, was a sure success!

OMG! Oh My God – A man files a case against god, a story sure sounded like a bizarre imagination. The film was low key but got involved in a lot of tension with religious forces. The attention sure helped and the story stunned. The film was a hit.

Gangs Of Wasseypur - A lot of gun file, dark humor, and a crime thriller for a subject. The success of the film in the popular lime light was not what was expected. But it certainly was popularly successful to everyone’s surprise.

ABCD – Remo D’Souza’s ambitious dance film starring so many reality show dancers from TV. There was very little hope for the film. But it managed to turn that around to be a box office hit.

Jolly LLB – A courtroom comedy with Arshad Warsi in the lead had not many expectations pinned on it. The film had a good treatment and a good story to tell and with this little USP, which fails for most other low budget films, it won the box office.

Dum Laga Ke Haisha – A low budget rom com, with an unconventional story line. The film was surprisingly liked by the audiences and was a box office success.
These films set good examples for makers to learn from. They have their own reason to be hits and many of them even had a second and third installment. They clearly showed that the audiences love an impressive story and not the glittery stardom in films!
