Lost Love Stories : Aamir Khan And Reena Dutta
Updated : October 09, 2016 01:34 AM ISTEveryone wants to have a perfect love story, but do perfect love stories really exist? Love doesn’t come with a guarantee card and a warranty for several years. Love just happens!
It comes with its own imperfections which seem rather perfect when the cupid strikes. Moreover, isn’t love all about accepting someone with their imperfections? Something worth pondering!
Bollywood has transformed many of us into daydreamers and die hard romantics, to an extent where we idolize certain couples and are intrigued by relationships of the la la land!
#LostLoveStories will bring you one love story that got lost in the seeds of time, every Sunday at 11 am.
They eloped.
In the movie Dil, Aamir runs away with Madhuri singing Humne Ghar Chhoda Hai, Kasmon Ko Toda Hai, on a hay laden truck. He did something similar in real life too, but he ran away in a local bus in Bombay, only to marry the girl he was mad about!
It doesn’t even remotely strike an Aamir Khan fan in the head that Mr. Perfectionist can be whimsical and if we can say, Majnu in love. But, in reality, he was!

Love kept happening to Aamir
The first time he fell in love, the girl rejected him. Probably he hid like we all do and cried (considering he loves crying and is very emotional). Second and third time, things didn’t work out between him and the girls. Fourth time again she rejected him. So you can very easily say, Aamir’s luck with love had always been a little dicey.

Love At Window Sight
As filmy as it gets, Reena used to live right opposite to Aamir’s building. In fact their windows were right opposite each other, so it was kind of a Padosan situation. During a rare interview back in 1999, he said, “I spent a little more time than natural in front of my window.” And after a few days of spending a little more time than usual at the window, Aamir didn’t think twice before confessing his love.“I just told her that I loved her and I hoped that she felt the same about me,” he said.
Third rejection, fifth disappointment in a row!
“And as it happened she said that she didn’t so I was devastated that this can’t be happening to me again. I’m not the kind of guy who gives up easily. I didn’t take no for an answer. After two days she met me and she said I still feel the same. I really avoided the window. I was heartbroken and I was trying to stay away from her and get over her.”

Love Letter? No, BLOOD Letter!
Now sit down and grab a chair while you read this, and this might shake you up a bit, because Aamir confessed that he wrote a letter in blood to Reena! “I just thought it was a way to express the deep love I have for her,” said an otherwise embarrassed Aamir, whose eyes still believed that what he did back then was absolutely fair in love. Unbelievable!
The runaway couple and secret wedding
Reena Dutta was a Hindu and Aamir was a Muslim. Religion didn’t come in the way of their love. Aamir Khan and Reena Dutta, both patiently waited for him to turn 21 on March 14, 1986. She was 19. They took the 2: 11 from outside his house, a few friends carried garlands for them and in fifteen minutes, they were married at the court in registrar’s office. Then, the two went back to their respective homes and kept it all a secret because Reena was studying and Aamir didn’t earn enough.
Hardly anyone knew until Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak that Aamir was infact married! He even sang a line of papa kehte hain for her in the movie, when she made a visit to the sets and ended up making a special appearance in the movie.
Mr. Perfectionist = Mr. Romantic
“I used to sing to her which she didn’t really like much.” He loved the movie Sagar and its song, Chehra hai ya chaand khila hai zulf ghaneri sham hai kya which he sang for her. Cute! Isn’t it?
The Divorce
You might find it to be an exaggeration, but Aamir mentioned in an interview that it takes him two years to come out of a relationship and get into another one. Now it’s kind of creepy, but it does make sense and his calculations do fit the paradigm in his life. In 1999, as he was gushing about his wife Reena and how much he loved her, it looked like he was trying to stress and lay a solid foundation of the fact that everything was great in his paradise and how happily married they were.
Reena who doesn’t make many public appearances and has never interacted with the media never came out to support or clarify anything about this relationship with the most important and individualistic Khan of Bollywood.

Was Kiran The Reason Behind Their Divorce?
If you read more in between the lines, it is said that while shooting for Ashutosh Gowariker’s Lagaan, Aamir met Kiran on a recce to Bhuj, which clearly means that they had met before the divorce and there could have been some closeness which became a probable ground for the separation. But Aamir refuted this.

The Live-In
In an online interview Kiran shared her little love story. She said, “We again connected on the set of an ad commercial that he was doing with Ashutosh Gowariker that I was assisting on. We hung out a lot together and became 2 am friends. We started seeing each other in 2004…. We like each other’s company and our friendship is still the basis of our relationship. I moved in with him and neither of us was hung up on marriage. After a year of living together, we decided to get married for two reasons.”

Kiran was 14 when she saw QSQT
Kiran had seen QSQT on a VCR at the age of 14. She once revealed, “I loved him in it but I enjoyed the film more. I was like, what a great film, what great music, what acting and what a cute guy!”

They’re still TOGETHER
In an explosive and one of the very first interviews after the separation in 2003, Aamir told HT, “No. Reena and I were married for 16 years. We grew up together as we both were very young when we got married. Our separation was tough on both of us. It was a special relationship and is still very close to my heart. I was alone for three to four years and then I met Kiran. I didn’t even work for almost two years as I was coping with it. I am very emotional. When we decided to part ways, Reena and I first explained the situation to our kids. My children, Junaid and Ira, are close to Kiran and Azad.”
According to a web portal, “Reena will have the custody of their children, Junaid and Ira. Aamir is allowed to meet his children thrice a week, on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, from 6 pm to 8 pm. He will also have a right to meet his kids on alternate weekends every month, from Friday 7 pm till Sunday 6 pm.”
Reena is duly spotted at all family functions and regular meetings with Aamir and there seems to be no discomfort, at least visibly!
So even Mr. Perfectionist’s love story wasn’t perfect! Blood letter, singing, and all the romantic attempts amidst a star’s controversial life couldn’t save young and pure love. Sometimes, enough is not enough; it’s just enough for whatever time you’re destined to be together for. Aamir and Reena are a classic example of an ex-married couple who can still see eye to eye, walk arm in arm and face the world with dignity. Something to learn from there, right?
Don’t you dare to write a letter in blood! Okay?
They eloped, and so did their love.
