Jaya, the better half of superstar Amitabh Bachchan and mother of Abhishek Bachchan and Shweta Nanda made her Bollywood debut as a teenager in Satyajit Ray's Mahanagar (1963). Her first screen role as an adult was in Guddi and later was noted for her performances in Uphaar, Kora Kagaz and many others. She appeared alongside her husband, Amitabh Bachchan in films such as Bansi Birju, Milli, Zanjeer, Abhimaan and Sholay.
Following her marriage and the birth of her children, Jaya took an indefinite sabbatical from films. She returned to acting with Govind Nihlani's Hazaar Chaurasi Ki Maa in 1998. Since then, she has appeared in films such as Fiza, Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham, Kal Ho Naa Ho and Ki & Ka which garnered her several awards and nominations.
During her career, she had won multiple awards for her performances. She was awarded the Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award in 2007. In 1992, she was awarded the Padma Shri by the Government of India.
