Box Office Report on Eid, Diwali & Christmas Festivals
Updated : April 06, 2016 11:02 AM ISTBollywood’s superstars love festivals because they can lay their bets on box-office collections with a blind eye! As easy as this may sound, even with prior confidence of a sure shot success, the biggies of our film industry have a tough time every year to block their coveted dates for their big releases. This is that time of the year when other stars, even the ones within the A listers refrain from launching even the teasers of the movies because they know their baaps are at work.
Eid, Diwali and Christmas are not mere festivals for Bollywood. They’re the box-office bonanzas that the Khans and Khiladis wait for.
Eid
Salman Khan has had his best movies released during Eid! Dabangg, Bodyguard, Ek Tha Tiger, and Kick have been the highest grossing films for Bhai so far.
According to the ratings given by the audience on our website, Dabangg is the winner among all the Eid releases in Bollywood in the last five years. With a rating of 3.6/5, Dabangg is followed by Ek Tha Tiger and SRK’s Chennai Express who have a tie at 3.3/5 ratings.
However, Salman still remains the King of Eid releases with Bodyguard (3/5) and Kick (3.2/5) respectively. No wonder he’s always ready to say, “Aaj ki party meri taraf se!”
Diwali
And you thought only Khans have conquered the festivals. Ajay Devgn has had a strong record with 3.4/5 ratings for Golmaal 3 on Diwali. He’s had quite a bit of blast during the festival of lights with Son of Sardaar as well which might have a bad rating of 2.7/5 but it stood against Yash Chopra’s last directorial venture Jab Tak Hai Jaan (3.1/5). Both did good business of 105 Crores (approx) and 120 Crores respectively amidst a massive fight of screens which also led to trouble between good friends Kajol and Aditya Chopra in those times.
If Salman is the baap of Eid, Hrithik Roshan is the patakha of Diwali! He’s so far leading the race with the highest grossing movie Krrish on Diwali which has a rating of 2.9/5. This is when you don’t count the lifetime collections of Prem Ratan Dhan Payo which are yet to come because it’s on another record breaking spree.
A common tangent between Eid and Diwali for Shah Rukh Khan is the fact that he’s always played safe with his films and they’ve consistently done well, if not fabulous!
Christmas
When it comes to Christmas, it’s Aamir Khan making Dhoom all the way! With Dhoom 3 and PK’s rock solid numbers, he’s left Salman and SRK behind. Akshya Kumar’s Tees Maar Khan has been the weakest festive release so far.
This Christmas, we’ll witness one of the biggest clashes of the year between Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol’s Dilwale and Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Bajirao Mastani. It will be interesting to see Deepika and SRK clashing who have actually given back to back hits together!
Festivals will always be crucial for Bollywood, but so far Christmas has been a winner among Eid and Diwali with the highest collections at the Box office, with 947 Crores. Edi with 945 Crores and Diwali at the tail end with 869 Crores have created history for films and superstars.
What’s also interesting to note is the fact that Movies released on Eid, Diwali & Christmas in last five years (2010-2014) have grossed box office collection of Rs. 2762.62 crores. This is funnily equal to salary of 50000 people (earning Rs. 50000 per month for a year) or 2.75 lakh people getting Rs. 1 lakh festive season bonus.
And, if distributed amongst 130 crore Indians, everyone will get Rs. 21. It is also equal to the box office collection of all released in 2012 put together. Nahi samajh aya?
Yeh lo!
Ab bhi nahi samjhe toh do whatever you want to do!
