Golden Globes nominations: 12 Years a Slave, American Hustle top the list
Updated : May 01, 2014 09:06 AM ISTThe much-awaited nominations for the 71st Golden Globe Awards have been announced on Thursday and there is a tie between 12 Years a Slave and American Hustle who have earned seven nominations each. Movies like Rush, Philomena, Mandela: The Long Walk to Freedom and Labor Day have achieved much more than expected though it was a disappointing day for Dallas Buyers Club and Saving Mr. Banks.
Fox Searchlight’s 12 Years a Slave and Warner Bros.’ Gravity continued their strong progress towards Oscars. But several December releases are giving them a strong competition, including Sony’s American Hustle, Inside Llewyn Davis and Paramount’s The Wolf of Wall Street. For years now, the Globes have established themselves as an accurate yardstick ahead of the Academy Awards. Last year it was a mixed example as Warner Bros.’ Argo won the Globe and then the Oscar and other seven of the 10 Globes’ nominees (drama and musical/comedy) managed to earn Oscar nominations. But in the directors category, only two contenders went on to fight for the Oscar (Ang Lee, Steven Spielberg), and the Globes’ winner Ben Affleck (Argo) didn’t even receive a nomination for the Oscars. The final stage of voting will begin on December 23, to be completed by January 8. The final awards ceremony will be held on January 12 at the BevHilton, hosted by Tina Fey and Amy Poehler, to be broadcast live on NBC.
