A. R. Rahman says he seeks help from god in every song
Updated : May 01, 2014 03:10 PM ISTThe two times academy award winner A. R. Rahman has full devotion towards music. His in-depth connection with music is so much that he cries while singing a soulful song. He loves his instruments and gets excited while touching them. Rahman has not studied much but is the principal of a music school. Rahman when enquired in an interview about knowing his music skills and his relation with music said, “My mother (Kasturi Shekhar) realised it, not me. My father was an arranger for composers and a Man Friday for many of them. He died when I was just nine years old. Till five years after my father died, she would rent out his musical instruments to run the house after which she was advised to sell the equipment and live with the interest, but she refused saying, 'No, I have my son. He will take care.' She has music instincts. Spiritually she is much higher than me in the way she thinks and takes decisions, for instance, her decision of making me take up music.”
The47-year-old revealed that his mother made him leave school when he was in class IXth.Rahman was little disheartened at the beginning but later he understood that her mother’s decision was the most appropriate for him, “I was torn at that time. And I thought that after a couple of years when I earn money, I would go back to finishing my education. But little did I know that education is about learning from life and putting you in a situation teaches you more than getting educated in a college. Not that studies is bad, but it's the difference between knowledge and wisdom. Wisdom comes from within. Knowledge is acquired and can sometimes put a screen on your wisdom.” He also said that he loves his mother but their relation is not like a movie’s mother-son relation, who keeps hugging. Instead he said that he has never hugged her mother.
The composer works through the night and says that if at the time of dinner, a song comes to his mind to compile then he ditches his dinner. It was learnt from Rahman that he and his wife had a conversation before marriage and for that reason, the misunderstandings are less. Music is a thing that excites him and makes him low as well, “Every time I sit for a song, I feel I am finished. It's like a beggar sitting waiting for God to fill your bowl with the right thought. In every song, I ask help from Him. Everybody around is so good, so to create music that will connect with so many people is not humanly possible without inspiration.” Rahman prays five times a day and his morning prayer is at 5.30. One more thing came from the composer is that he is a Rajnikanth fan. He stated, “I believe in many things he believes in. Learning from life is what I have learnt from him.” The singer has one regret in life that he missed the opportunity to work with Michael Jackson. We all hope that his passion for music remains the same and his school brings out world’s best singers and composers.
