Tamil superstar Suriya’s Kanguva is a colossal project that took nearly three years and over Rs 350 crore to make. However, with less than 24 hours to its release, Kanguva faces a major hurdle that could hurt its opening day potential—advance bookings have yet to fully open in key markets, sparking concern among Suriya’s fans.
Kanguva appears to be caught up in complex trade negotiations, with stakeholders driving hard bargains to maximize profits. This situation has shifted the conversation around the film to its troubled advance bookings and its struggle to secure premium screens across the country.
Despite these challenges, the producers remain optimistic. Studio Green CEO Dhananjayan reassured fans that the release would go as planned and urged people not to spread negativity. “#Kanguva is First Pan-Indian release in large number of screens for a Tamil film. Made on a huge budget with lot of passion & commitment by @gnanavelraja007 sir @Suriya_offl sir @NehaGnanavel mam , @directorsiva sir & Team. #Suriya sir lent huge support in promoting the film across the world Show your love and don’t spread negativity prior to release. The film will deliver on its promises as per the theme of the film shown on release trailer. Spread Love & Faith,” he tweeted.
Dhananjayan also promised that bookings would open across all national multiplex chains. However, at the time of writing, multiplexes in the Telugu states—one of Suriya’s key markets—had not yet started taking bookings, despite significant promotional efforts there.
Reports suggest that Kanguva may be suffering due to a standoff between distributor Mythri Movie Makers and Sunil Narang’s Asian Cinemas. “Asian is running their Renovated Single Screens & Complexes on %Sharing basis. Mythri wants a shift to Rental system from #Kanguva onwards for these Cinemas! Not even RRR demanded this!! Asian Cinemas was not given #Kanguva so far. So Asian refused to play in all their Plexes including AMB/AAA also!! This stalemate is to earn Maximum Nett to Share conversion for #Pushpa2 but Mythri testing it now as it can't afford to lose a Big Local Chain on 5th December!,” tweeted AndhraBoxOffice.com.
Nonetheless, Kanguva is tracking strong pre-release ticket sales in theatres that have begun bookings. The film is expected to open with over Rs 5 crore in Kerala and could reach Rs 7 crore if reviews are favourable. Despite the challenges, Kanguva has already sold over Rs 13 crore in tickets for its opening weekend and is set to deliver Suriya’s biggest opening yet.
