The producers of Thangalaan are thrilled with the movie's reception at the box office. Starring Chiyaan Vikram in the lead role, Thangalaan opened in cinemas on August 15, coinciding with the Independence Day celebrations. It marked the biggest-ever opening of Vikram's career, and the subsequent favourable reviews assured the producers of the movie's commercial success.

Vikram's performance was unanimously praised, although some critics noted alleged shortcomings in director Pa Ranjith's style of narration. The film is performing well in the Telugu states, and to capitalize on this, the main cast and crew of Thangalaan visited Hyderabad to thank the media and fans for their support.

While expressing his gratitude to fans, Studio Green CEO Dhananjayan revealed that the producers have big global plans for Thangalaan. "We are very confident at Studio Green that we will take it to the Oscars. This film will compete with international films for sure. Thangalaan should become the pride of Indian cinema," he said.

Vikram plays the role of a tribal leader set in the late 1800s. The film follows the adventure of Thangalaan, who assists a greedy British officer determined to uncover a gold mine in Kolar. Ranjith has pushed his limits as a storyteller, being inventive in portraying generations of oppression and resistance, using elements of horror and magic realism.

Thangalaan ends on a triumphant note with a lost tribe reclaiming its identity and vigour to resist exploitation by greedy men. The filmmakers have always maintained that the storyline of Thangalaan offers scope for expanding it into a franchise. "Ranjith asked me to mention here that because you all liked Thangalaan so much, we have decided to make part 2 very soon," said Vikram, while speaking at the Thank You meet in Hyderabad.
