Tamil star Chiyaan Vikram's latest movie, Thangalaan, is off to a great start at the Tamil Nadu box office. The movie opened in cinemas amid huge expectations, thanks to the compelling teaser trailers, on Thursday, coinciding with the Independence Day holiday.

Thangalaan, written and directed by Pa Ranjith, is a perfect film for the Independence Day release, considering its theme resonates with the spirit of the national holiday. The film's reception has been very encouraging in Tamil Nadu, where it's expected to surpass the opening collections of other major Tamil releases this year.

According to early estimates, Thangalaan's opening day earnings are said to be larger than Dhanush's Raayan. "A double-digit opening in Tamil Nadu is almost guaranteed for #Thangalaan as per current trends. #DemonteColony2 is aiming for over ₹3 crore, depending on evening and night shows," tweeted Cinetrak.

In light of favourable reviews for Thangalaan, the film's performance during the evening and night shows is expected to see a significant uptick. If it continues its strong trend, Thangalaan may very well surpass Kamal Haasan's Indian 2 for the number 1 spot in terms of the highest opening day collection.

Meanwhile, Demonte Colony 2, a horror thriller, has also managed to put up a decent show at the box office despite the massive competition from Thangalaan. The film is predicted to cross the ₹3 crore mark at the Tamil Nadu box office on day one. It has also received mostly positive reviews from critics, which could boost ticket sales.

The film is a sequel to Demonte Colony, which first came out in 2015. Writer and director R. Ajay Gnanamuthu, the creator of this horror franchise, has helmed the movie. The movie stars Arulnithi, Ramesh Thilak, Sananth, and Abishek Joseph George, among others.
