Vikram on why he doesn't compete with Thalapathy Vijay, Ajith Kumar, or Suriya: 'My focus is on elevating cinema...'

Tamil star Vikram has always been known for his dedication to pushing the boundaries of his craft, often choosing challenging and unconventional roles over commercial blockbusters.

For Tamil star Vikram, Thangalaan has been one of the most demanding films of his career, both physically and mentally. The actor underwent a significant transformation, shedding body weight and embracing a deglamorized tribal look, all in his quest to push his limits as an actor. This dedication to his craft is not new for Vikram, who has consistently sought to reinvent himself with every role. However, this commitment to diversity in his roles has meant that Vikram doesn’t dominate the Tamil box office in the same way as some of his contemporaries like Thalapathy Vijay, Ajith Kumar, and Suriya.

During a press conference on Sunday, Vikram was asked about his thoughts on not commanding a fan following on par with these stars. Vikram, ever the candid and thoughtful artist, made it clear that he is content with the choices he has made in his career.

"You deliver excellent performances in every film, but you don’t have a huge fan following like Ajith or Suriya," a reporter asked Vikram.

Vikram responded with characteristic humility and insight. "That’s because you are not aware of my fan following. You go and watch it in theatres, you will know," he said, subtly hinting that his impact may be more nuanced and widespread than is immediately apparent. "I don’t believe in top 3, 4, or 5. There are fans, and there are audiences. I believe every audience member is my fan in one way or another."

Vikram explained that he is aware of his position in the commercial hierarchy but emphasized that he prioritizes artistic growth over box office dominance. "I have already reached great heights. I have done movies like Dhool and Saamy. I am not a stranger to that kind of movie. But I am seeking different roles, and trying to elevate cinema to the next level," he said.

He added that while his experimental films might not always be commercial blockbusters, they contribute to the evolution of cinema and his growth as an actor. "When I do such experiments, the movies become smaller. All those efforts and experiences led to me doing Thangalaan," Vikram noted.

Reflecting on his career, Vikram pointed out that some of his most critically acclaimed work did not necessarily dominate the box office. "Even today, Raavan is believed to be the best film in my career," he remarked, underscoring his belief that true success lies in the quality and impact of the work, rather than just its commercial performance.

Thangalaan, which is written and directed by Pa Ranjith, is due in cinemas on August 15.
