Vijay Sethupathi’s Maharaja beats Kareena Kapoor’s Crew to emerge as the most-viewed Indian film on Netflix

    The Vijay Sethupathi-starrer Maharaja has received widespread critical acclaim since its theatrical release and has continued to perform exceptionally well following its digital debut. In a recent update, the film achieved a record-breaking milestone, becoming the most-viewed Indian film on Netflix, surpassing Crew that starred Tabu, Kareena Kapoor Khan and Kriti Sanon.

    Maharaja made its digital debut on July 12, 2024, and has consistently topped the trending movies chart. According to the latest reports, the film has garnered 18.6 million views on Netflix, surpassing the viewership of Crew, which recorded 17.9 million views. Another movie that made it onto the list of most-watched Indian films on Netflix is Kiran Rao's Laapataa Ladies, with 17.1 million views. Following closely are Ajay Devgn's Shaitaan with 14.8 million views and Hrithik Roshan's Fighter with 14 million views.  

    Expressing his gratitude to fans, director Nithilan Swaminathan took to social media to thank audiences for helping the film achieve this remarkable feat. He also expressed appreciation for Netflix and the entire team in his tweet. You can check it out here. 

    Interestingly, Maharaja stands as the only South Indian film among the top 10 most-viewed Indian films on Netflix, securing the top spot on the list.

    Upon its OTT release, the film received widespread praise from non-Indian audiences who were impressed by the plot twists and the lead actors' performances. Many international viewers took to social media platforms like TikTok and Instagram to discuss and recommend the film to those who haven't watched it yet. In response, many Tamil fans urged the film's makers to promote it internationally and capitalize on its growing popularity.

    Vijay Sethupathi's 50th film follows a barber who seeks the help of a few cops to solve a crime involving his daughter. Upon its release, the film received an overwhelming response and became one of Kollywood's biggest blockbusters, earning an impressive Rs 107 crore at the box office. Directed by Nithilan Swaminathan, this revenge drama also features Anurag Kashyap, Mamta Mohandas, and Natty Natraj in key roles.
