Vaazhai 2 on the cards - Mari Selvaraj says sequel of his critically acclaimed film will focus on this character

Mari Selvaraj’s latest film Vaazhai was undoubtedly one of the most hard-hitting films created in Kollywood in recent times. The movie has been labeled as the Tamil filmmaker’s career-best feature film, highlighting the plight endured by plantain laborers, a chapter from Mari Selvaraj’s childhood. Despite the hard-hitting theme, the film won audiences’ hearts and became not only a critical success but also a box office hit, earning more than Rs 40 crore against its Rs 5 crore budget.

Now, the director has announced a sequel to the film and has shared interesting details about what the second part will focus on.

Mari Selvaraj announces Vaazhai 2

At a recent public event, the director revealed that he made Vaazhai to help people understand who he is and his upbringing. “I made Vaazhai to introduce people to who Mari Selvaraj is. But if people are still confused about my story, I would continue to make as many films like Vaazhai again and again. I hope to make Vaazhai 2 soon, and I will be working with Sivanaindhan’s character (played by Ponvel) again. I’d also like to add that Vaazhai 2 will tell an even more hard-hitting story,” the director said.

He went on to praise the media for playing a key role in spreading the word about the film, which contributed to its success at the box office. “I must thank the media. In some way, they played a huge part in spreading the word about my film. Today, the media plays a larger role in giving people opportunities to voice their views,” the director said.

Vaazhai OTT release date

Recently, it was reported that the Mari Selvaraj-directed film will conclude its theatrical run on a high note and make its exciting OTT debut soon. According to reports, the film will be available for streaming from September 27, 2024, on Disney+ Hotstar. Interestingly, the film was initially planned to be released directly on OTT, but it exceeded the makers’ expectations and went on to become a successful theatrical venture.

Written, directed, and produced by Mari Selvaraj, Vaazhai narrates the tragic life story of Sivanaindhan, a twelve-year-old plantain laborer. Inspired by Mari Selvaraj’s own story, the film stars Ponvel M, Raghul R, Kalaiyarasan, Nikhila Vimal, J Sathish Kumar, Dhivya Duraisamy, and Janaki in key roles.
