Directed by Vetrimaaran, this upcoming rural drama marks the first collaboration between Suriya and the acclaimed filmmaker. The film is said to be an adaptation of CS Chellapa’s Tamil novel of the same name. In an interview, Vetrimaaran revealed that Suriya has been rearing a bull at his home to get into character. "I am the only one who hasn’t really spent time with bulls. I think the shoot is likely to begin by the end of this year," the Vada Chennai director added.
The film, starring Suriya, will also feature director-turned-actor Ameer Sultan in a pivotal role. According to reports, Ameer is speculated to play the main antagonist. Actress Andrea Jeremiah has been cast as the female lead opposite Suriya, according to sources. Based on the first glimpse of the film released during its announcement, Vaadi Vaasal is centered around the ancient sporting event Jallikattu, which is traditionally held on Mattu Pongal day in Tamil Nadu. Suriya has reportedly undergone Jallikattu training to perfect his role. Along with this intense training, Suriya is set to sport two different looks in the movie and is rumored to play dual roles.
Interestingly, directors Lingusamy and Vasanthabalan had initially planned to helm the film, but the project was shelved. It was later picked up by Vetrimaaran, who cast Suriya as the leading man.
