Veteran Malayalam actress Urvashi has issued a powerful statement urging the Association of Malayalam Movie Artists (AMMA) to take decisive action based on the findings of the Hema Committee report . The report has exposed serious issues within the Malayalam film industry, including widespread sexual exploitation and hostile working conditions for women.
Urvashi emphasized the urgency of the situation during a media interaction on Saturday. "The time has come for the AMMA to take action based on the report. They can no longer make excuses," she asserted, highlighting the organization's responsibility in addressing the allegations. "The time for reading and contemplating is over," she added, calling for immediate and meaningful intervention.
The actress voiced her deep concern over the allegations, which, she said, cast a shadow over the entire industry. "There are so many people like me who make a living from cinema. The public will think that we are working among men like these. It's a very concerning situation," she remarked, stressing that the industry's reputation is at stake.
Urvashi also warned that these issues could define the image of the Malayalam film industry if not addressed promptly. "The government, and before that, the AMMA, should take proper measures to address the findings revealed in the report," she urged, underscoring the need for accountability at the highest levels.
The Hema Committee report has sent shockwaves through the industry with its revelations of systemic exploitation and mistreatment of women, particularly those in lower-tier positions. The report highlights not only the prevalence of sexual harassment but also the lack of respect and fair compensation for many workers in the industry.
"As a member of the AMMA, I wish it takes a strong stand on the matter," Urvashi continued, referencing a recent press conference by AMMA President Siddique. "He (Siddique) can no longer try to escape from the matter . We need to treat the report with great seriousness as women have shown great courage in sharing their experiences. This is not a case of someone trying to settle personal scores. I stand with those women."
Urvashi’s remarks have added significant pressure on AMMA to respond to the damning report, as the industry grapples with its potential fallout.
