It seems that for many, the Kannada film industry entered the national spotlight only after the phenomenal success of the KGF series and Kantara. However, actor-filmmaker Upendra recently set the record straight while promoting his upcoming movie UI, firmly stating that the industry has always been home to extraordinary talent and groundbreaking stories, even before these recent box-office triumphs.

While promoting UI in the Telugu states, where he enjoys a considerable fan base, Upendra was asked why Kannada cinema struggled to gain national attention until KGF and Kantara. He provided a thoughtful and balanced response, emphasizing both the industry’s historic achievements and its ongoing evolution.

“It’s not like that. There have been many path-breaking movies in Kannada in its 100-year history. People don’t know it, and we only talk about what we know. You wouldn’t even be able to imagine such movies. Kannada filmmakers have made a variety of films. You are able to see KGF and Kantara because they are big hits, but there are many other hits in the industry. Recently, there was a film named Bheema. The way Vijay directed and acted in it left me in awe. Another movie, Krishnam Pranaya Sakhi, was a musical blockbuster. And there are directors like Yograj Bhat and Suri,” said Upendra.

For years, the Kannada film industry has been seen as the underdog compared to its southern counterparts in Tamil and Telugu cinema, both of which dominate the Indian box office. However, the groundbreaking success of KGF and Kantara has shifted perceptions, encouraging filmmakers and actors to explore grander narratives and larger budgets.

Upendra, a visionary director known for crafting thought-provoking films, is making his return to direction after a long hiatus with UI. Besides directing and writing, he also plays the lead role in the dystopian drama, which is said to critique the politics of hate and corruption.

UI is slated to release on December 20.
