Malayalam star Tovino Thomas on Sunday announced the release plans for his highly-awaited movie, ARM. The film is set to arrive in cinemas worldwide in September, coinciding with the Onam celebrations.

Onam is the most coveted holiday in the Malayalam film industry, marked by grand feasts and blockbuster movie releases. However, in recent years, the industry has struggled to fully capitalize on this major holiday in Kerala due to the pandemic, which caused significant disruptions, stalling several projects and upsetting the release calendar. The aftereffects of the pandemic's impact on distribution were felt until last year.

The Malayalam film industry bounced back with three major releases during the last Onam. RDX, a small-budget action drama, cashed in on the festival rush and earned over Rs 100 crore in ticket sales in record time.

This year has been particularly rewarding for Malayalam cinema. For the first time in its history, the combined theatrical collection of Malayalam movies in the first six months of 2024 exceeded Rs 1000 crore. While theatrical revenue hit an all-time low in neighbouring states, mainly due to the Lok Sabha elections and a lack of exciting new movies, the box office in Kerala thrived.

Malayalam movies also did the unexpected by filling the content gap in theatres in other states and expanding their fan base in Tamil Nadu and the Telugu states. However, in recent months, there hasn’t been much excitement at the Kerala box office. It's safe to assume that ARM will change that.

Based on the teaser, ARM is a period drama starring Tovino in three distinct roles, one of which appears to be a legendary thief. The teaser promises an action-packed, visual spectacle—just the kind of content audiences hope to see during the holiday season. Helmed by Jithin Lal, ARM also stars Krithi Shetty, Basil Joseph, Aishwarya Rajesh, and Rohini, among others.
