Thug Life teaser: Kamal Haasan returns as a warrior in Mani Ratnam’s ambitious new film

A new teaser for Thug Life was released on Thursday to mark Tamil superstar Kamal Haasan's 70th birthday. This film holds special significance as it marks Kamal's reunion with director Mani Ratnam after more than three decades. The latest teaser has only amplified the already high anticipation surrounding the movie.

The teasers released so far promise an epic story addressing a global issue facing humanity. Kamal’s character, Rangaraya Sakthivel Nayakar, is depicted as an ancient warrior on a meaningful quest, adding a layer of gravitas to the film.

Thug Life stands out as a departure from Mani Ratnam's usual cinematic style. Both visually and narratively, it marks a significant shift in his approach to storytelling. The slow-motion shots in the teaser are not meant for reflection but instead are designed to build suspense for an intense, adrenaline-fueled experience. At 68, Mani Ratnam seems to be reinventing himself as a filmmaker, and Kamal Haasan is the ideal collaborator for this venture. Kamal played a key role in establishing Mani Ratnam as a mainstream filmmaker with artistic sensibilities. Their collaboration on Nayakan was instrumental in giving Mani Ratnam his first major project and budget, establishing him as a powerful creative force. Nayakan allowed Ratnam to pursue his unique vision of filmmaking, free from commercial constraints.

With Kamal and Mani Ratnam reuniting for Thug Life, expectations are naturally sky-high. The movie is a multi-starrer; alongside Kamal Haasan and Simbu, it also features Trisha and Ashok Selvan, among others. Mani Ratnam and Kamal are co-producing Thug Life through their respective home production banners.

Mani Ratnam completed filming at a swift pace, and the movie is now in post-production. The film is slated for release in the summer of next year, poised to be one of the most anticipated cinematic events in Tamil cinema.
