Tamil superstar Suriya was set to collaborate again with director Sudha Kongara for the highly-anticipated political drama Purananooru.
Suriya in Purananooru
Tamil superstar Suriya was supposed to reunite with director Sudha Kongara for a political drama called Purananooru. The movie was said to revolve around a high-voltage political issue, set in a different period. It is based on real-life events that happened in Tamil Nadu in the 1960s.
Besides playing the lead role, Suriya was also supposed to bankroll the project under his 2D Entertainment. The filmmakers even unveiled motion posters revealing the film's main star cast, including Dulquer Salmaan, Nazriya, and Bollywood actor Vijay Varma.
After creating initial hype, the project was put on hold, leading to speculations about a creative fallout between Suriya and Sudha. However, there seems to be more to the issue.
Social media influencer Abhishek Raaja revealed that Suriya felt he was not in the right place or time to make this movie. "Purananooru talks about a very important political issue. However, he thought that he required more maturity to understand it fully, and on top of that there were issues with the dates, and Sudha Ma'am needed more time to shape the movie," claimed Abhishek in an interview with SS Music.
According to reports, Purananooru addresses the anti-Hindi imposition protests in Tamil Nadu. Sudha is very determined to make this film. It is said that the film has been offered to actor Sivakarthikeyan, and the director is waiting for him to complete his current commitments to start the production of Purananooru. However, an official confirmation on the same is awaited.
Purananooru would have marked Suriya's second collaboration with Sudha after Soorarai Pottru. The 2020 movie was also based on real-life events, and it was directly released on streaming due to the pandemic-induced lockdown at the time.
Currently, Suriya is shooting for a period gangster drama, which is helmed by Karthik Subbaraj.
