One film that is currently busy making history is The Kerala Story. Directed by Sudipto Sen and backed by Vipul Amrutlal Shah, who are also the co-writers, the film stars Adah Sharma in the lead in one of her most versatile and powerful roles till date. It follows the story of a group of women from Kerala who are brainwashed into converting to Islam and ultimately being recruited for Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS). Made on a budget of just Rs 15-20 crore, it has now earned over Rs 200 crore becoming an all time blockbuster.
As the film entered the third week in theatres, it also entered the coveted 200 crore club. In many ways, despite all the controversies that surround it and the poor reviews by critics, The Kerala Story has been unstoppable at the box office. In his latest tweet, trade analyst Taran Adarsh revealed, “#TheKeralaStory cruises past ₹ 200 cr mark… Achieves ALL TIME BLOCKBUSTER status… [Week 3] Fri 6.60 cr, Sat 9.15 cr, Sun 11.50 cr, Mon 4.50 cr. Total: ₹ 203.47 cr. #India biz. Nett BOC. #Boxoffice.” That truly is a big reason to celebrate for the entire team of The Kerala Story.
An even bigger cause of celebration is the comment section, where netizens are showering the film with love. Some are sadly trolling the rest of the industry while lauding The Kerala Story. For instance, one social media user wrote: “Aese hi movie bani to bollywood ka nam Hollywood se bhi jyada hoga....aur agar karan johar ki movie phir hit hui to bollywood barbad ho jayega”, whereas another netizen shared, “I pity those who’ve not watched this masterpiece yet. They’re missing out on a cinematic brilliance on big screen.” A third comment read: “One of the biggest blockbuster. A genuine success and awareness among public. This movie is big achievement.”
