Tamil superstar Thalapathy Vijay’s latest film, The Greatest of All Time, has officially secured its streaming partner, with Netflix revealed as the platform during the movie’s screening.

Historically, Tamil films that sign pre-release deals with the streaming giant debut digitally within four to five weeks of their theatrical release. Box office performance, even if strong, typically does not delay this window.

For instance, Vijay’s previous film Leo, directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj, was released last year and became a major hit. Despite its strong box office showing, it arrived on streaming platforms before completing five weeks in theatres.

Similarly, The Greatest of All Time is expected to have a shorter theatrical run. Another indication of its early streaming release is the film's struggle to secure screens at national multiplex chains in North India. These cinema chains adhere to a strict rule requiring movies to avoid streaming platforms for a maximum of 8 weeks post-release. Films that do not follow this guideline are often rejected by multiplexes.

The Greatest of All Time was unable to secure screens at these national chains. According to trade sources, this may result in a box office loss of up to Rs 50 crore. However, the premium paid by Netflix is likely to offset any potential losses for the producers.

Written and directed by Venkat Prabhu, The Greatest of All Time is his first collaboration with Vijay, raising high expectations. The film opened to packed houses across South India, with shows starting as early as 4 AM. However, the film has received mixed reviews from both critics and audiences.
