Thalapathy Vijay's latest movie, The Greatest of All Time (The GOAT) , is arriving on the streaming platform sooner than expected. The film will become available for streaming on Netflix on October 3, less than a month after it made its theatrical debut.

The GOAT was released in cinemas to packed houses on September 5. The film's streaming release is in line with the prevailing trend in the Tamil film industry, where most new movies that secure a streaming partner before their release become available on OTT platforms after just four weeks of exclusive theatrical run. This practice, however, has been a point of contention between producers and stakeholders in North Indian states.

For instance, The GOAT was shunned by all national multiplex chains due to its shortened theatrical window. As per the rules, new Hindi films aiming for wide releases in national chains are required to stay off streaming platforms for at least eight weeks. Vijay's previous movie Leo faced a similar boycott for the same reason.

Despite the limited release in North India, Vijay's popularity among Hindi-speaking audiences has been growing, as reflected in the box office earnings from single-screen theatres in those regions.

The box office performance of The GOAT was, however, underwhelming. The film reportedly earned over Rs 450 crore, just surpassing its Rs 400 crore production cost. Notably, Vijay was paid a staggering Rs 200 crore for his role in the film.

The GOAT marked Vijay's first collaboration with director Venkat Prabhu and carried high expectations. However, it garnered mixed reviews from both critics and audiences. Except for Tamil Nadu, where Vijay enjoys immense popularity, the movie’s performance was disappointing.

The film follows the struggles of a seasoned spy agent who faces a tough challenge in the form of his younger, sharper, and more ruthless clone. The GOAT also features a strong supporting cast, including Prashanth, Prabhu Deva, Mohan, Jayaram, Sneha, and Laila.
