The GOAT box office: Thalapathy Vijay starrer rakes in Rs 300 cr over opening weekend, passes Monday test in TN
Thalapathy Vijay's latest film, The Greatest of All Time (The GOAT), continues to defy expectations at the box office despite mixed reviews.
Spark from The GOAT
Thalapathy Vijay has once again demonstrated that his stardom is critic-proof with his latest movie, The Greatest of All Time (The GOAT). Despite drawing mixed reviews, the film remained a top choice for moviegoers during the extended weekend coinciding with the Ganesh Chaturthi holiday.
The GOAT surpassed the Rs 100 crore mark in Tamil Nadu alone by the end of its four-day run on Sunday. This marks Vijay's eighth movie to achieve this box office milestone, and it becomes his second-fastest film to reach this benchmark in Tamil Nadu, right after his previous blockbuster, Leo.
As per the latest estimates, The GOAT has grossed around Rs 300 crore worldwide. Tamil Nadu remains the biggest contributor, followed closely by Karnataka, Kerala, and the Telugu states. The film made a strong debut at the global box office, earning over Rs 126 crore, according to the producers. In Tamil Nadu, it raked in over Rs 30 crore on the opening day, while in Karnataka, it grossed over Rs 10 crore. However, it underperformed in Kerala, despite Vijay's massive fan following there. Its performance was also underwhelming in the Telugu states, where four-day estimates are pegged at Rs 8.5 crore.
The Hindi version of The GOAT has been surprisingly well-received by audiences in the Hindi belt. Reports suggest that the movie earned close to Rs 8 crore within the first three days of release. Trade analysts believe that collections could have been significantly higher if the film had secured wider releases in multiplexes across North India. The film is expected to have had a strong Sunday in North Indian circuits, with actual earnings still awaited.
The movie has also seen strong advance bookings for Monday in Tamil Nadu, passing a crucial box office litmus test. If the momentum continues, The GOAT could set new box office records in Tamil Nadu.
