Flashback scene's criticism
Despite grossing more than Rs 600 crore at the box office and becoming one of the highest-grossing films of 2023, Thalapathy Vijay’s Leo did receive criticism for its unconvincing flashback sequence. For the unversed, viewers were disappointed with the weak writing of the particular scene, which centered around human sacrifice, as many felt the filmmaker could have delivered a more compelling and impactful sequence. Addressing the flaws, director Lokesh Kanagaraj admitted that the 20-minute flashback sequence in Leo, featuring Thalapathy Vijay, Madonna Sebastian and Sanjay Dutt, could have been executed differently. He acknowledged the audience's criticism, saying, "Yes, I could have improved the 20-minute flashback in Leo, but due to commercial constraints, I left it as it is." Lokesh also mentioned that if he gets the chance to make a sequel, he would name it Parthiban after Vijay's character in the movie.
Starring Thalapathy Vijay, Trisha, Sanjay Dutt, Arjun Sarja, Gautham Vasudev Menon, and Mathew Thomas in key roles, Leo centers around a café owner in Himachal Pradesh named Parthiban, who is under the radar of goons who suspect him to be an estranged son of drug cartel lord Antony. The film is currently available for streaming on Netflix.
