Thangalaan: The team of the upcoming Vikram starrer has Oscar dreams for the movie

    The team of the upcoming period-drama Thangalaan revealed that they wanted the movie to enter the Oscar race as well as submit the movie to many international film festivals.

    According to a report the movie has already exceeded its original budget by 50% so that it can meet international standards.

    The movie is directed by Pa. Ranjith and is based on the lives of miners in the Kolar Gold Fields. The movie is written by Tamizh Prabha and Pa. Ranjith.

    The filming of tThangalaan has been delayed by a month after actor Vikram suffered an injury to his rip cage during rehearsals.

    Hopefully, the actor makes a speedy recovery. In the meantime, the actor's performance as Prince Aditha Karikalan in Ponniyin Selvan has earned him a lot of praise from critics and fans alike.

    The movie has at the end of its sixth day at the box office grossed an impressive 260 crores worldwide. Making it the third highest-grossing movie of 2023.

    The movie received overwhelmingly positive reviews from critics and audiences alike when it hit theaters last week.

    The OTT rights of Part 2 were sold for a whopping 125 crores to streaming giant Amazon Prime Video and the movie is expected to stream on the platform this July.

    Ponniyin Selvan 1 was a huge critical and commercial success becoming the highest-grossing Tamil movie of 2022 and the fifth highest-grossing Tamil movie of all time with a total box office collection of 500 crores.

    Official movie production started on December 11, 2019, in Thailand with a budget of 500 crores, and both Part 1 and Part 2 were shot back to back. Production wrapped on March 2022.

    The movies are based on Kalki Krishnamurthy's 1955 novel, Ponniyin Selvan, Which focuses on the Chola dynasty specifically Rajaraja Chola and his rise to power.

    Ponniyin Selvan 2 is currently running in theaters.
